“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is a bizarrely hideous jumble of images and ideas that is every bit as convoluted as its ambiguous title would lead you to believe. It’s both familiar and bizarre, overstuffed and undercooked at the same time. And while it contains some impressive individual elements, the overall result falls far short of the magic that the filmmakers were hoping to achieve.

Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” which is not exactly a recommendation, is a sort of retelling of the holiday classic based on the story you already know. It contains snippets of Tchaikovsky’s music as well as ballet performed by Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin, but it is far from sufficient. As a matter of fact, 99 minutes of these world-class performers practicing their performance would have been more than enough time in comparison to this misguided extravaganza. Furthermore, while the film’s mythology is complex, it is also extremely tedious.

Despite the fact that Lasse Hallstrom and Joe Johnston didn’t work on the film at the same time, this “Nutcracker” is credited to two veteran directors, Lasse Hallstrom and Joe Johnston, in an unusual move. When Hallstrom was unable to complete the film due to a scheduling conflict, Johnston (“Jumanji,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) was brought in to oversee extensive reshoots with extensive visual effects. Perhaps this explains why the film feels so disjointed and herky-jerky in its tone. From the outside, it’s simple to make educated guesses. What is clear, however, is that the script, written by Ashleigh Powell for the first time, has both too much and not enough going on at the same time.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Nutcracker And The Four Realms quiz.

Allow me to make an attempt to explain. Clara is played by Mackenzie Foy, who portrays a young girl who, following the death of her mother, is understandably struggling to enjoy the holiday season. The actress, who played Renesmee Cullen in the “Twilight” finale and a young Jessica Chastain in “Interstellar,” has a warm and engaging presence, but her British accent is a little off-putting at times. But she must make her way to the lavish holiday party she attends with her father (Matthew Macfadyen) and siblings (Ellie Bamber and Tom Sweet) every year at the palatial home of her godfather, Drosselmeyer, despite her aversion to it (Morgan Freeman). Claire’s mother made arrangements for an extra-special Christmas gift for her this year, which she will only be able to open with the help of a key that will be waiting for her in a magical, parallel world. Claire’s mother passed away shortly after making the arrangements.

When she finally arrives at the location after following a long, golden thread through a tree trunk, she discovers that it is actually made up of four realms, hence the title. Each of these lands has its own unique theme: they are known as the Land of Flowers, the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Sweets, and the Land of Amusements—the latter of which is a terrifying, abandoned location where the cruel Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) reigns with her army of mice. When Clara and Phillip (newcomer Jayden Fowora-Knight) first meet, they are attacked by a giant mouse made entirely of mice, which is eerily similar to the Minions’ attempt to be helpful by piling on top of each other. Sadly, it is just one of many computer-generated set pieces that are awkward, unclear, and not nearly as exciting as they should be. It was shot by the talented cinematographer Linus Sandgren, who won an Oscar for his work on “La La Land,” and you would only know it from the visually arresting dance sequence that plays during the closing credits. The rest is a jumble of gaudy kitsch.

Whatever the case, it turns out that Clara’s mother was the queen of the Four Realms, and Clara, as the princess, is obligated to remain and restore the land to its former state of peace and harmony. Why? Because it wouldn’t be a Disney film without a deceased parent and/or a princess, or at the very least some sort of princess merchandise to sell. Why? While this may be true, the gorgeous and ornate gowns created by renowned costume designer Jenny Beavan, who has won two Academy Awards and been nominated for ten (for films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and “A Room With a View”), are among the film’s few high points.

About the quiz

When Clara meets with the head of the flower realm (a flamboyant Eugenio Derbez) and the ruler of a snowflake realm, they provide her with some guidance (Richard E. Grant, covered in icicles). The Land of Sweets is led by Sugar Plum, who is played by a nearly unrecognizable Keira Knightley in the role of the perky leader of the land. Knightley gets a rare opportunity to ham it up for broad, comic effect in “The Nutcracker,” which she wears beneath tiers of sparkly purple and a pink cotton candy swoop of a bouffant. The tone of her voice is perky and girlish as she delivers a series of amusing double entendres, and it’s a refreshing change of pace for this well-known actress.

However, her character, as well as Helen Mirren’s, suffer the most as a result of how rushed the script for “The Nutcraker” feels. A major twist occurs about halfway through the film, prompting my nine-year-old son to turn to me and ask, “Who knew?” while we were watching it together. That is not the case with me. There is an abrupt tonal shift in the film, from which it never recovers, and which strangely transforms this magical fairy tale into a wartime indictment. Because that is something that children enjoy at Christmas. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is a massive and expensive lump of coal in the form of a ballet.
