Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz’s co-written and co-directed film “The Peanut Butter Falcon” tells the story of Zac (Zack Gottsagen), a man with Down syndrome who has been placed in a nursing home by the state because he has no family and no resources. He has made friends with every senior citizen in the facility, as well as Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), a sweet young woman who works at the establishment. In Zac’s world, wrestling is everything, and he spends his days watching an old video tape produced by a wrestler named Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church), whom Zac idolizes and who he idolizes. Zac’s ultimate goal is to attend the wrestling school run by Salt Water Redneck, which is featured in the video. As a result, Zac attempts to flee. Repeatedly. Eleanor is forced to classify Zac as a “flight risk” because of his behavior. Zac shares a room with Carl (Bruce Dern), who complains about having to watch the same wrestling video over and over again all day but sympathizes with Zac’s desire to get out of his room and into the world. When Zac escapes through the window one night, Carl assists him in bending back the iron bars on the window, suggests that Zac grease himself up with hand soap, and watches his roommate flee into the night, barefoot and only wearing his underwear.

Zac seeks refuge under a tarp on the deck of a rusted boat. A crab fisherman named Tyler (Shia LaBeouf) owns this boat, and he’s embroiled in an increasingly violent conflict with a rival fisherman named Duncan (John Hawkes). In the midst of being pursued by Duncan through the complicated tributaries of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Tyler comes across his “stowaway.” While this is going on, Eleanor is on the lookout for Zac before her supervisor orders him to be committed to a state hospital with a bad reputation.

Tyler and Zac become fast friends after a rocky start. Tyler agrees to assist Zac in his mission to get to Salt Water Redneck’s wrestling school, and while on his way to Florida, Tyler decides to lend a hand. Walking through a swampy landscape, they began their journey. By the time Eleanor catches up with them, they have finished building a raft out of lumber that was given to them by a blind preacher from the backwoods. After some deliberation, she is persuaded to accompany them on their outlaw journey by Tyler, who has fallen in love with her. The trio floats down the coast, untethered from the trials and stresses of their respective worlds, much like Huck and Jim float down the Mississippi River in the film Huck and Jim.

All of this may seem a little too sentimental to be believed, but it isn’t. “Peanut Butter Falcon” is a buddy film, but it has the feel of a fable, right down to the way cinematographer Nigel Bluck shoots the film. The action of the film takes place in a specific location. In the air, you can smell the salt, pollen, and mold that has accumulated. The waves, cornfields, marshes, crab pots, and even the condition of Tyler’s boat are all based on actual events, rather than a fictionalized version of reality. The narrative is punctuated by bluegrass, country songs, and gospel hymns. Even though it is fiction, it is a fable that is grounded in the present, in the here and now. The film appears to be populated primarily by non-professional actors, or at the very least by people who actually live in the area, with the exception of the “names.” It makes a significant difference. Zac is a real-life person who lives in the real world. Zac, in contrast to so many other disabled characters in film, is not used as a symbol, a metaphor, or as a vehicle for “inspirational” messages. He’s the central character, and he’s outspoken and strong, as well as funny and vulnerable at the same time. He has never had a friend in his life. He’s always wanted to be “bro dawgs” with someone and finally got his wish. One of the many pleasures of watching Tyler’s relationship develop is one of the many highlights of the film.

Some of the adventures work better than others, depending on how you approach them. Some of it appears to be fabricated. However, these are minor quibbles in the context of the overall achievement of “The Peanut Butter Falcon.” When it comes to their roles, both LaBeouf and Johnson (and later, Church) approach them with ease and simplicity, highlighting Gottsagen’s talent (who has studied acting since he was a child) to perfection. Even in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise, Johnson’s irrepressible sense of humour serves her well as an actress. Watching Johnson’s reaction to LaBeouf’s initial flirtation—while trying to maintain her boundaries all the while being drawn into his humorous rat-a-tat—is just one small example of what this film—and its cast—does exceptionally well. The eventual appearance of Church in the role of The Salt Water Redneck does not take place as planned. Nothing works in the real world.

Cliches and all, there’s something at work in “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” something eccentric and exuberant, that’s worth noticing. Nilson and Schwartz’s meticulous attention to the details of Zac’s world draws attention to Gottsagen’s amusing and intelligent performance, which lends the film an authenticity it would not have otherwise possessed. The discussion about “representation” in cinema frequently excludes people with disabilities. Able-bodied actors frequently portray disabled characters, and they have even been nominated for Academy Awards for their efforts. This is not to say that these aren’t good or empathetic performances; however, all it takes is one look at Gottsagen’s performance to see what we’re missing when we dismiss the concerns of the disabled community regarding representation. It is inconceivable to imagine a physically fit “name” taking on this role and bringing even a fraction of the natural abilities of Gottsagen to the table.
