Charlie, played by Terrence Jenkins, is a ladies’ man who has made a pact with himself to avoid making any emotional commitments in his life. In the first two seconds of the movie, he picks up a hot babe on the beach and takes her back to his palatial pad for 1.) a photo shoot (his Instagram feed is well-known), and 2.) supposedly hot sex, but it’s so discretely filmed that it’s hard to tell. In other words, the movie starts off with a bang. Later on, he hangs out with his pals while he’s carrying yet another babe on his arm. This one is a dumb blonde who can hardly string two sentences together (maybe because her dress is so tight). The story of how an unrepentant man-whore opens his heart to love is told in “The Perfect Match,” which was directed by Bille Woodruff and written by Gary Hardwick, Dana Verde, and Brandon Broussard. “The Perfect Match” was directed by Bille Woodruff. Some of it is so predictable that you could set your watch by it, but there is a welcome (and surprising) layer of complexity running through the film that makes it a little bit more than your standard fare. This layer of complexity makes the film a little bit more than your standard fare. The likable and hilarious cast certainly helps, too.

Charlie is a talent agent who has a knack for taking care of his clients, defusing their meltdowns, and recognizing the potential in stars on YouTube, Vine, and Snapchat. (Brandy makes an appearance in a very entertaining cameo as a diva who is so dedicated to her spirituality that she has hired a bodyguard named Boris to carry her around in his arms for one hour every day.) Charlie has a large and supportive group of friends, all of whom play important roles in the narrative of the movie. Ginger (Lauren London) and Victor (Robert Christopher Riley), who have been in a relationship since they were children and are now making preparations for their wedding. Victor is having an existential crisis due to the fact that Ginger makes more money than he does. Rick (Donald Faison) and Pressie (Dascha Polanco, from “Orange Is the New Black”) are trying to have a baby but it hasn’t happened yet, and they’re starting to worry about it. Dascha Polanco plays Pressie. Charlie’s friends are relentless in their criticism of him for still not having a significant other. (You have to wonder what topics of conversation Charlie’s friends would find interesting if he ever found love.) Charlie maintains that he is content with his life as it is and that he does not believe everyone should get married. It’s a valid point to raise. Sherry, who plays the role of a therapist and is played by Paula Patton, is Charlie’s sister. She is convinced that unresolved grief over the death of their parents is the reason why Charlie shut the door to his heart. Sherry bombards Charlie with self-help speak. Charlie just shrugs it off with a laugh. He is sick and tired of being harassed, and who could blame him? Charlie, on the other hand, accepts the challenge posed by his friends to limit the number of women he dates in the time leading up to the wedding of Victor and Ginger. They shake on it, and two seconds later, Charlie has a meet-cute with Eva at a juice bar (Cassie Ventura).

Editor’s Picks

Eva has only been in committed relationships in the past, but she recently expressed interest in having some fun with no attachments. They have non-explicit, supposedly hot sex not only at his house, but also in restaurant bathrooms, and everything is fine between them until he starts to develop feelings for her, primarily due to the fact that she shows interest in his photography and listens to him when he complains about his job. They have sex not only at his house, but also in restaurant bathrooms, and everything is fine between them until he starts to develop feelings for her. He never probes her for information about herself in any way. He doesn’t even seem curious. It is difficult to determine whether or not the screenwriters made this choice on purpose or whether it is an indication of a blind spot in their thinking. Cassie Ventura, who is best known for her work as a singer and model, delivers her lines in a wooden monotone, and there is nothing behind her eyes. This is not helpful. She is stunning, and Eva’s attire is the kind of outrageous sex-bomb extravaganzas that would be at home in a Prince music video or on the catwalk at Fashion Week, but she lacks any genuine personality. Since the plot is supposed to be about a hopeless ladies’ man who falls in love almost against his will, it would have been helpful to give Eva some qualities other than a gorgeous body and an endless wardrobe of crazy outfits. This would have helped the story flow better.

Over the course of a “long weekend,” when things start to go wrong for Charlie, he basically becomes an alcoholic. He is currently resting in bed while being encircled by empty bottles. He is slouched over on the boardwalk, drinking from a flask in his hand. It’s all a little bit ridiculous, isn’t it? His friends are worried, but he continues to isolate himself from everyone else. Some of the choices that have been made at work don’t sit well with him at all. It was the lovely Eva with the dead eyes who opened his eyes to the possibility that he could get more out of life.

Some of this is effective, while other aspects of it are not. There are some awkward scenes in which the comedy completely bombs, and there are also some subplots that don’t really contribute that much to the story. (The office stuff, with the exception of “Boris” toting around Brandy in his briefcase, is both tedious and overly complicated. It’s like a lighter version of “Jerry Maguire.”) However, music video director Bille Woodruff, who has also directed a couple of follow-up films in popular franchises, keeps the story moving quickly, and whenever all of the friends are onscreen together, the movie is successful because of the very real dynamic they create. Woodruff has also directed a couple of follow-up films in popular franchises. It is not impossible to believe that these individuals have been friends since they were in elementary school. You think highly of each one.

The events that transpire in “The Perfect Match” are not entirely conventional, despite the fact that much of the plot can be predicted. The fiction or fantasy that governs a significant portion of our lives is the notion that “all that is necessary” to achieve happiness is to locate “the right person.” And it’s been said that everyone can find their “right person” in the world today. There are many cliches. “When you no longer feel the need to be in a relationship, voila! Your ideal companion is just around the corner!” “You just haven’t encountered the right person at this point in time.” “Just when you think you’ve gotten used to being by yourself, the person of your dreams walks through the door!” Or, even worse, “Being in a relationship is the best way to navigate the challenges of life.” These platitudes are so pervasive that they could almost be considered propaganda. However, real life is much more complicated than that; some people never find their “perfect match,” and even if they do, nothing in this world is without flaws. Charlie has problems, that much is clear, and they are portrayed in fairly broad strokes (why won’t he go visit the graves of his parents? ), but at least Charlie’s problems have more depth than the majority of other movies of this genre allow for them to have.
