The producers of “The Possession of Hannah Grace” were clearly aiming for a dark tone with their film. After all, the story revolves around an exorcism that goes horribly wrong, resulting in even more mayhem months later at a morgue. It’s likely that they didn’t intend for it to be visually incomprehensible, which is exactly what this quick and dirty—and largely scare-free—thriller film turns out to be.
The majority of Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen’s film takes place in the middle of the night at a hospital, a brutalist monolith that exudes doom and gloom throughout the building. (The exterior is actually the Boston City Hall building, which has been slightly transformed with the addition of some signage.) Once inside, however, everything else is pitch black, including the lobby, the hallways, the women’s restroom, and, most importantly, the morgue.. Actually, Van Rooijen and screenwriter Brian Sieve make use of the lighting in that room as a vaguely intriguing plot point in the film: It is controlled by motion sensors, which activate with a clickclickclick and an ominous buzz whenever someone walks through the door. As a not-so-subtle nod to Christian symbolism, the overhead lamps are also in the shape of a cross.
Without a doubt, this was an aesthetic decision, an attempt to create an unsettling atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is frequently difficult to see what is going on, and this murkiness contributes to a general sense of frustration…………………………………… That “The Possession of Hannah Grace” is one-note in its foreboding tone, punctuated by the occasional jump scare, certainly doesn’t help the situation.

“Hannah Grace” begins with the title character (Kirby Johnson) undergoing what appears to be a fairly standard movie exorcist procedure. She’s tied to a bed, and priests are standing over her, praying and sprinkling holy water on her head and body. Writhing and contorting, while spewing vile words, is caused by the devil living within her. She is eventually smothered with a pillow by her father (Louis Herthum), who loses his cool after witnessing the devastation and chaos she has caused in the house.

Most films about demonic possession come to a close at this point; here, however, it is only the beginning. Because three months later, Hannah’s body is discovered at the morgue on the very first night of work for Megan (Shay Mitchell of “Pretty Little Liars”), who has just started as an intake assistant at the hospital. After years of battle with demons and substance abuse issues, Megan finds herself in the morgue, where she hopes for a fresh start with a new job as a mortician. This is pretty much all we know about the character who is at the center of the film’s narrative. To secure the position, she insists in a winking bit of foreshadowing: “I believe that when you die, you really do die. “This is the end of the story.”) There’s even less information available about the young woman who serves as the film’s title character and the film’s primary narrative force.

After all is said and done, Megan tries to follow all of the procedures she’s just learned, including photographing and fingerprinting the body before putting it away in storage, but Hannah Grace’s overwhelming evil—even in the form of a cold corpse—threatens to throw everything out of whack. It doesn’t take long before she’s sneaking out of her drawer when no one’s looking and wreaking havoc on the few employees who have the misfortune of being assigned to work during the cemetery shift. However, while this central premise is the only thing that makes Sieve’s script compelling, its execution is dreary throughout.
About the quiz
The fact that the rules are unclear is a contributing factor to the problem. The mangled and bony Hannah Grace crawls in a crablike manner at times, her crackcrackcrack noise accompanying each jumpy movement of her mangled and bony body. (When you first hear it, the sound design is quite creepy, thanks to all of the auditory tricks, but it quickly becomes monotonous.) On occasion, she walks on her toes. She can be seen leaping forward or skittering up a wall on occasion. She has the ability to disrupt cell phone signals and power lines, as well as move entire ambulances with a single shove, but she chooses to spend her time hanging around the hospital—and waiting to exact her vengeance on Megan until the very end.

We wouldn’t have a movie otherwise—and “Hannah Grace” is only 85 minutes long as it is, with an ending that is so abrupt that you’ll wonder if you’ve missed something important. (Spoiler alert: you haven’t gotten anywhere.) It is possible that we will be able to see what is going on in the outside world, however.
