“The Secret Life of Pets 2” demonstrates the old adage that you can go to the well — or, in this case, the dog bowl — one too many times before you get thirsty. Even considering that this is only the second installment in the series, this is a remarkable achievement.
The first season of “The Secret Life of Pets” aired in 2016, and it was similarly brief but consistently amusing. It tapped into a question that, I’m sure, every pet owner (or, excuse me, human companion) has pondered at some point: what do our furry friends do all day while we’re away from home? Although it’s an incredibly simple concept, it’s an irresistible one for a movie. It’s “Toy Story,” but with animals instead of toys. The voice cast was so strong, the adventures were so playful, and the animated character design had such an oddball appeal (as is always the case with Illumination Entertainment productions) that it was a delightful experience for the entire family to watch and enjoy.
“Pets 2,” on the other hand, is woefully underdeveloped. To be honest, it looks more like the jumbled scraps of ideas for three separate shorts that have been awkwardly stitched together and stretched out to feature length. At some point, the story lines come together to deliver a trite message about bravery, but by that point, the strain has already become apparent.

As the voice of Max, the always-reliable Patton Oswalt takes over for Louis C.K. (whose career has suffered as a result of multiple masturbation allegations) in this installment of the animated series. Max is a terrier mix who lives happily in New York City with his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper), and another rescue dog, Duke (Eric Stonestreet). The many returning neighbors of various species and breeds include Kevin Hart’s hopped-up bunny, Snowball, who now considers himself a superhero; puffy Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate, who is just as adorable as ever), who is still secretly in love with Max; and portly cat Chloe (the scene-stealing Lake Bell), who keeps everyone on their toes with her passive-aggressive antics

However, when Katie marries and has a child, Max’s life is completely turned upside down. This is one of the few emotionally honest themes that veteran Illumination director Chris Renaud, co-director Jonathan del Val, and returning writer Brian Lynch explore: the complications that arise when a newborn enters the home, causing confusion for the family’s dogs and other pets. Suddenly, they must share with this tiny person all of the love, attention, and playtime that had previously been reserved for themselves alone. While growing up and going to pre-school, Max develops into a loving protector for young Liam (Henry Lynch) – at least until his instincts become neurotic and obsessive, which is when the film becomes a sad comedy.

There are numerous stories like this. “Pets 2” follows, with Max, Duke, Liam, and the adults embarking on a road trip to the countryside for a getaway—and, ostensibly, to introduce an entirely new variety of talking farm animals—into the world. Among them is Harrison Ford, who, to his surprise, is appearing in his first voice-acting role as the elder statesman herding dog Rooster, lending his sardonic growl to the role. A no-nonsense Shih Tzu named Daisy (a warm welcome for Tiffany Haddish) has tasked Captain Snowball, as the film’s title character is known, with the task of saving a tiger cub from the clutches of an evil circus master in his hometown of Manhattan (Nick Kroll doing a thick Russian accent). Gidget must also retrieve Max’s favorite squeaky toy, which he had requested she keep safe while he was away, after it accidentally bounces into the chamber of horrors that is the crazed cat lady’s apartment below ground level.
About the quiz
All at once, it’s a lot to deal with, and it only works intermittently. The sequence in which Chloe teaches Gidget how to behave like a cat in order to sneak her way into the felines’ den is full of laughs, thanks to Bell’s delivery and the pointed observations about cat behavior that are made throughout the film. (The surreal atmosphere that permeates this plotline makes it the most compelling of the three, despite the fact that it mines the same ideas we saw in the first film about Gidget being more powerful and resourceful than her dainty appearance would suggest.) Throughout the film, there is a running gag in which a deranged turkey stalks Max around the farm, which is amusing the first couple of times but becomes tedious after a few viewings. And while Hart and Haddish have a lot of fun with their banter, the vicious and violent situations in which they find themselves ultimately leave a bad taste in their mouths.

It’s jarring to see Renaud and del Val jump back and forth between these three stories in such a way that it only serves to emphasize their episodic nature. This thing occurs, followed by this thing, which occurs, followed by this thing. In contrast, none of the plotlines gains much traction on their own, let alone when they are all brought together at the conclusion, when everyone has returned to their respective hometowns in the big city. It’s more of the same as the original “Pets,” but it’s also less of the same. Even though your children will be sufficiently entertained, they also deserve a dog who is willing to learn a few new tricks for their amusement.
