A Norwegian helicopter chases a sled dog to an American study station in Antarctica. The American witnesses the passenger unintentionally blowing himself and the aircraft up. The station commander, Garry, shoots the pilot dead in self-defense after he fires a rifle and yells at the Americans but they are unable to comprehend him. R.J. MacReady, an American helicopter pilot, and Dr. Copper depart to explore the Norwegian facility. They discover the burnt body of a deformed humanoid and bring it to the American station among the frozen corpses and scorched wreckage. The bones are autopsied by their biologist, Blair, who discovers a typical assortment of human organs. When Clark kennels the sled dog, it quickly transforms and ingests a number of the station dogs. The squad is informed by this disturbance, and Childs destroys the creature with a flamethrower. Blair examines the Dog-Thing and deduces that it is a living thing that can flawlessly mimic other living things. The Americans discover a large excavation site with an alien spacecraft that Norris believes has been partly buried for over 100,000 years, as well as a smaller, human-sized dig site, thanks to information retrieved from the Norwegian base. After running a computer simulation that shows the creature could quickly assimilate all species on Earth, Blair starts to feel uneasy. Controls are put in place at the station to lessen the danger of assimilation.

The malformed humanoid’s remnants attempt to ingest a lone Bennings, but Windows halts the process and MacReady destroys the Bennings-Thing. Blair is also detained by the team after he destroys the radio to prevent escape, sabotages all the vehicles, and kills the surviving sled dogs. Copper recommends comparing the crew’s blood to uncontaminated blood that is kept in storage to check for infection. However, after learning that the blood supplies have been destroyed, the crew loses confidence in Garry’s leadership, and MacReady assumes control. He, Windows, and Nauls discover Fuchs’ burned body and conclude that he killed himself to escape assimilation. While MacReady and Nauls explore MacReady’s cabin, Windows returns to the base. Nauls abandons MacReady in a blizzard during their return, thinking he has been taken in after discovering his torn clothing in the shack. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Thing quiz. While the team is debating whether to let MacReady inside, he intrudes and uses explosives to keep them at bay. Norris seems to experience a heart attack during the meeting. Norris’s chest changes into a huge mouth as Copper is trying to defibrillate him, and it eats off Copper’s arms, killing him. The Norris-Thing is burned by MacReady, but as it tries to flee, its head separates and is also burned. According to MacReady’s theory, the Norris-Thing proved that every component of the thing is a distinct living form with a unique survival instinct. He suggests using a heated piece of wire to test the blood from each survivor and has each man restrained, but is compelled to murder Clark after he lunges at MacReady with a scalpel. Except for Palmer, whose blood constricts in the heat, everyone passes the exam. When the Palmer-Thing is exposed, it changes, escapes its restraints, and infects Windows, causing MacReady to destroy them both.

While the others go to try Blair, Childs is left in charge. However, when they return, they discover that Blair has escaped and has been assembling a miniature flying saucer, which they destroy. When they come back, Childs is gone, the power generator is destroyed, and the guys are left without heat. MacReady hypothesizes that the Thing will go back into hibernation until a rescue team can come since there is no other way out. The Thing cannot be permitted to escape, so MacReady, Garry, and Nauls decide to detonate explosives to destroy the station. However, the Blair-Thing kills Garry, and Nauls vanishes. The Blair-Thing changes into a huge monster and destroys the detonator, but MacReady sets off the explosives by using a stick of dynamite, resulting in the station’s destruction. Also, you will find out which character are you in this The Thing quiz. Childs returns, claiming he got lost in the storm while pursuing Blair, as MacReady sits by the burning remains. They admit the futility of their mistrust and share a bottle of Scotch whisky, exhausted and slowly freezing to death.
