A Norwegian helicopter chases a sled dog to an American study station in Antarctica. The American witnesses the passenger unintentionally blowing himself and the aircraft up. The station commander, Garry, shoots the pilot dead in self-defense after he fires a rifle and yells at the Americans but they are unable to comprehend him. R.J. MacReady, an American helicopter pilot, and Dr. Copper depart to explore the Norwegian facility. They discover the burnt body of a deformed humanoid and bring it to the American station among the frozen corpses and scorched wreckage. The bones are autopsied by their biologist, Blair, who discovers a typical assortment of human organs. When Clark kennels the sled dog, it quickly transforms and ingests a number of the station dogs.
