The origin tale is something that each and every superhero has. Along with Superman, we have arrived back in Smallville. We’ve seen Batman begin. Peter Parker has been bitten by a radioactive spider in not one but two different blockbuster franchises, and we have watched both times. Now, the prototypical hero himself, Jesus Christ, is given his own origin story in the form of the film “The Young Messiah.”

It’s a fresh take on a tale that’s been told a million times before, and it’s actually based on a book written by Anne Rice called “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt.” It’s a novel approach to an old tale. The television movie “The Young Messiah” imagines what life might have been like for Jesus (played by Adam Greaves-Neal) when he was seven years old and just starting to come to terms with his abilities. In many respects, he is comparable to other children his age. He enjoys chasing people and playing tag in his free time. He gets bullied. And just like any other little boy who adores his mother, he loves nothing more than to cuddle up with Mary (Sara Lazzaro) and listen to the stories that she tells.

But! In addition to that, he has the ability to reanimate a deceased bird. He has the power to heal his ailing uncle. And he can give sight to a rabbi who was born without it. And as he travels from Egypt back to Nazareth with Mary and his father, Joseph (Vincent Walsh), he learns to hone his abilities and—spoiler alert!—ultimately accepts his identity and the responsibility that comes with it as the Son of God. Mary and Joseph are played by Vincent Walsh.

However, the more compelling aspects of the narrative are those that center on humanism rather than religion. Cyrus Nowrasteh, who is also the co-writer of the film, approaches the miraculous moments of Jesus’ journey in an earnest manner. However, the production values in this film are significantly higher than those in the vast majority of religious films that have been released in recent years. (The issue that I typically have with films based on religion is not the subject matter; rather, it is the way in which the story is told.) Even though the action sequences and flashbacks have a hilariously cheesy quality, especially when they’re meant to be terrifying, some of Nowrasteh’s imagery, such as widescreen images of the desert or the sight of the sweet-faced, curly-haired Jesus bathed in heavenly sunlight, can be quite beautiful. One example of this is the sight of Jesus being bathed in sunlight.

But the actual writing does not take any risks in the same way that the idea behind the script does (which Nowrasteh wrote with his wife, Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh). Jesus and his family travel from their exile back to their homeland, encounter various people along the way, and try to escape the centurions sent by the flamboyantly evil king Herod (Jonathan Bailey), who is hellbent on killing this mysterious child. Along the way, Jesus and his family meet various people and try to escape the centurions. For those of you who are nostalgic for the “Harry Potter” franchise and/or Alan Rickman, their leader is Sean Bean, who portrays a character named Severus. Jesus, being only seven years old at the time, is full of curiosity and asks a lot of questions as they travel. In addition to this, he prays a great deal, despite the fact that he is not entirely conscious of the fact that he is connected directly to God.

Since we are aware of the conclusion of the story, there is very little room for suspense. Evidently, Herod’s orders for Jesus’ capture and execution are not carried out at this time by anyone. Rory Keenan plays the role of a demon who looks like Jared Leto and has blond hair, dark eyeliner, and sinister facial hair. This demon is depicted as following Jesus around and making malicious suggestions to people while Rory Keenan portrays him as looking like Leto. They don’t refer to him by his proper name—Satan—but they might as well.

About the quiz

The devilish characters in “The Young Messiah” are, for the most part, ridiculously feminine, which is a distressingly dated trend that runs throughout the book. Even though he is a Jew himself, the conceited Herod behaves in a way that can be described as both cruel and anti-Semitic. Greaves-Neal, on the other hand, exudes an air of gentleness and composure as the messiah, and his large brown eyes have a sense of forthrightness. He does the best he can with what he’s been given, and the reliably reassuring nature of his performance, as well as the film as a whole, will probably please the faithful target audience that is looking to have their beliefs confirmed. (On a side note, it would appear that Jesus was of British descent. Who would have thought?

But these over-the-top performances and Christian McKay’s general presence as Jesus’ uncle Cleopas at least help to liven things up a little bit. McKay, who is probably best known for playing Orson Welles in Richard Linklater’s 2008 film “Me and Orson Welles,” brings a similarly larger-than-life presence here, and he gets the best line in the whole movie. “Me and Orson Welles” was directed by Linklater. Cleopas yells out, “I despise having to hide in caves!” when it is suggested by their traveling companions that they will need to continue taking cover in caves in order to evade Herod’s men. It’s possible that the line wasn’t intended to be humorous, but it made me laugh out loud, and I thought it was very good.
