A smoke jumper, Hannah Faber (Angelina Jolie) is a daredevil firefighter who drops from helicopters into the middle of a forest on fire, and she is a hard-drinking, hard-living member of the boys’ club. Those who wish me dead is a job that attracts a certain type of person, and Hannah appears to be that type of person when we first meet her in the film “Those Who Wish Me Dead.” Known for being “crazier than the rest of them,” she failed her most recent psychiatric evaluation after a catastrophic failure of judgment caused the deaths of two children during a fire. “Crazier than the rest of them,” she says. She’s been demoted (in her opinion) to one of the fire towers, which stands alone in the middle of the forest along the Continental Ridge, where her job is to monitor weather conditions and keep a watchful eye out for approaching danger. She’s been shaken by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but she wants to get back into the action. The situation in “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” which is based on the novel by Michael Koryta, provides her with more than just an opportunity to prove her worth to others.

All of this has the potential to be interesting, and it falls squarely within Jolie’s wheelhouse. She’s tough, but she’s also wild, and she’s both strong and vulnerable. She is drawn to the roles of broken people who find their way back to health. In “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” directed by Taylor Sheridan, whose screenplays for “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water” demonstrate his talent for blending suspenseful thrillers with complex character studies, we get to the heart of Hannah’s “issues,” which aren’t as complicated as they appear. While “Those Who Wish Me Dead” attempts to incorporate multiple narratives, including a massive forest fire and tossing it all together, the film’s erratic structure makes it difficult to feel the emotions that are required by a film like “Those Who Wish Me Dead.” In many ways, the film feels like a throwback to disaster films from the 1970s, such as “The Poseidon Adventure” and “Towering Inferno,” in which character development is at best cursory, as character development is subordinate to the disaster unfolding around the characters.

Editor’s Picks

The triggering event in “Those Who Wish Me Dead” takes place in a location that is not related to the forest in question. When a “forensic accountant” named Owen (Jake Weber) and his young son Connor (Finn Little) realize that “bad guys” want to kill them for uncovering shady political finances while working for the District Attorney, they flee Florida with their young son Connor in tow. It’s hard to imagine a pair of murderers who are more cold-blooded than this pair of ruthless assassins. They are played by Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult, and they are as relentless and inhuman as the forest fire that they deliberately start for reasons that are completely unclear. It is determined that Owen is most likely heading to the wilds of Montana to hide out with his brother-in-law, and they set out in hot pursuit of Owen. Because of the rapid pace of the journey, young Connor finds himself in the middle of the Montana woods, terrified and alone, and desperate to find assistance. That’s exactly what he discovers when he comes across Hannah, who is trapped in a fire tower in the middle of nowhere.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Those Who Wish Me Dead quiz.

With the development of Hannah’s relationship with the child, there is tremendous opportunity for growth. She believes she may have a chance at redemption because Connor is roughly the same age as the boys who died in the conflagration. However, the film is preoccupied with jumping around to other events and other characters, such as Owen’s brother-in-law Ethan (Jon Bernthal) and Ethan’s pregnant wife Allison (Medina Senghore), who are both perplexed as to why Owen and Connor haven’t shown up for their wedding. It’s fascinating to watch Ethan and Allison interact with one another, and their dynamic is so compelling that it rivals what’s happening with Hannah and Connor out in the forest. These two could star in their own movie on their own. Allison “runs a survival school,” but that information is delivered in a throwaway line that is so quick that you might miss it entirely. It’s important information that will come in handy later on in the process. This should have been given more attention.

In addition to several effective action sequences, perhaps the most frightening of which depicts the terrifying way in which fires actually run and pick up speed, particularly on slopes of land, sending Hannah and Connor fleeing for their lives. More could be said about Hannah’s ability to do her job, and more could be said about the smoke jumpers’ unique abilities and skills, for the benefit of those in the audience who aren’t already aware of them. “The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” and “Point Break” are examples of films in which Kathryn Bigelow accomplishes this difficult feat. In “Point Break,” the focus is not so much on the characters as it is on the jobs that people do, and how those jobs create their own culture, requiring personality types that do not fit into “normal” life. “Those Who Wish Me Dead” takes place in this world, but it is only sketched-in rather than fully explored.

Angelina Jolie had a very interesting period in the early-to-mid 2000s when she alternated between serious dramas and action films, attracting the widest possible audience and dominating the industry cross-genres in a way that few other actresses have been able to do (Sigourney Weaver comes to mind as a possible equivalent). Jolie’s star power is a natural force, and she knows how to harness it to great effect in her films. By the Sea,” the film she wrote and directed, was a throwback to the glamorous disaffected European dramas of the 1960s and 1970s, directed by people like Michelangelo Antonioni or Jean-Luc Godard’s “Contempt,” which served as a clear precursor for “By the Sea.” I was practically alone in falling in love with the film. During the course of the film, Jolie indulged her penchant (and gift) for melodrama, as well as glamorous and yet realistic suffering, placing her in the company of film goddesses of yore, such as Elizabeth Taylor or Monica Vitti. The fact that Jolie is a divisive figure, as are most individualists in general, makes it always interesting to see the projects to which she contributes her talents. It has been several years since Jolie has starred in an action film, and she is the driving force behind “Those Who Wish Me Dead.” Unfortunately, it is a film that lacks a clear focal point.
