With their elegantly aging faces front and center in front of the rest of us mere mortals, two handsome, eternally captivating silver screen royals coming together against a breathtaking tropical background (and in frothy advertising trailers) is undoubtedly a beautiful sight. Sadly, the tenuous connections between “Ticket to Paradise” and George Cukor’s screwball masterpiece end at that line. And you should put the blame on a depressing script that doesn’t bother with a compelling plot and instead depends too much on its A-list stars’ allure.

But on a whim, to decide to stay in Bali for the big life decision of marriage? You mean to tell me you got engaged to someone you just met that day? Even the tough ice harvester Kristoff from the animated film “Frozen” chuckled at this notion. And that was a Disney film set in the nineteenth century.

Objectively, Lily doesn’t actually decide to get married that day. But the movie falls so short in developing the affection and chemistry of the couple that it seems like a same-day decision. Instead, co-writers Parker and Daniel Pipski utilize Lily’s plot as justification for bringing Clooney’s David and Roberts’ Georgia together, as well as Lily’s parents and each other’s bitter ex-partners. We are given the opportunity to explore various sights beyond the resort, including the magnificent grounds of Gede’s devoted family and two popular attractions. However, “Ticket to Paradise” seems strangely uninterested in any family relationships or anything related to Bali, with the exception of a few cartoonishly depicted nuptial rites. Bless the old-school stars Roberts and Clooney for enhancing this drab collection and, in certain cases, even getting you to overlook the absurd movie that surrounds them. However, that scarcely suffices, especially if you’re hoping for a return of the romantic comedies from yesteryear.
