There are films about ugly, vile people, and there are also films that themselves are ugly and vile. The latter is referred to as “Triple 9.”

Turning his interest in macho nihilism that he explored more effectively in “The Proposition” and even in the flawed “Lawless,” to bank robbers and the Russian mob, director John Hillcoat once again assembles a stunning cast of household names and then proceeds to waste almost all of their talents on an under-lit, increasingly ridiculous, and generally ineffective dirty cop movie. “The Proposition” was a much better example of Hillcoat’s ability to explore macho It is a film that shamelessly lifts elements from both Michael Mann and Sidney Lumet, but the filmmakers behind it clearly have no idea what it is that makes either director tick. On occasion, the overwhelming talent of the cast will elevate the material, but it is not nearly enough to shake the feeling that you could use a shower when it is finished.

The heist of a bank in downtown Atlanta by former special operations mastermind Michael Atwood (Chiwetel Ejiofor), dirty cop #1 Marcus Belmont (Anthony Mackie), dirty cop #2 Jorge Rodriguez (Clifton Collins Jr.), getaway man Russel Welch (Norman Reedus), and his brother Gabe (Aaron Paul), who might as well be wearing a red shirt and named “Future Liability,” is arguably the best scene in “Triple 9 Hillcoat and cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis (“The Drop”) do an excellent job of framing the bank heist. They take us from the high-pressure environment of the vault to the escape attempt that goes awry after a red dye pack explodes. It’s tense, it’s beautifully shot, and it prepares the audience for a high-stakes thriller that never materializes.

It was later revealed that the five individuals weren’t there for the financial gain; rather, they were given the mission of stealing a very particular safety deposit box by the Russian mob mastermind Irina Vlaslov (played by Kate Winslet), who is now refusing to pay the group until they complete another assignment. Irina has power over Michael due to the fact that Michael is the father of a child with Irina’s sister Elena (Gal Gadot), and the Russians are essentially holding the child as a hostage, not allowing the child’s father to see him. Michael has a son with Elena. Not only is this plot thread poorly developed, but it also feels a little bit morally grotesque in the sense that it seems to be designed to create sympathy for someone who should be a villain, especially when we learn what the meaning of the title is.

If you didn’t already know, 999 is the emergency number that means “officer down.” As part of the planning for the second heist, which will involve a building belonging to Homeland Security, the gang comes to the conclusion that killing one of the police officers will be the most effective way to divert the attention of the other officers. They say that a triple nine will get a response from any vehicle. And all of them will be preoccupied to the point where they won’t be able to react to the new robbery. Marcus is provided with an environmentally conscious new business partner in the form of Chris Allen (Casey Affleck). They will devise a plan to ensure that Allen is killed, and then they will carry out one more job for Irina while the authorities are arriving at the scene of the crime. They never give any thought to the fact that Allen’s uncle, played by Woody Harrelson, is the one in charge of leading the investigation into who they are. Or that Gabe’s ever-increasing erratic behavior is a cause for concern. Or that their entire plan is predicated on a number of uncanny coincidences and plot holes the likes of which are only seen in fictional films.

Close-ups and almost complete darkness make up the majority of “Triple 9’s” cinematography. Hillcoat and Karakatsanis come to the mistaken conclusion that this will make up for the absence of any characters or plot that are interesting enough to care about. Therefore, we get camerawork that is sweaty, dirty, and grimy, and it is under-lit to an almost comedic degree; however, none of this resonates beyond the realm of showy filmmaking. Because there is so little else in the movie that could be the focal point of attention, the film is constantly drawing attention to its visual style, or lack thereof. Despite the fact that they cast a large number of talented actors and actresses, the writer Matt Cook and director Hillcoat give them almost nothing to do. They are just moving parts in a larger plot, and beyond the descriptions you’ve read above, there is nothing noteworthy about their personalities or the histories they come from. Michael is a father to a child. Gabe is the one who uses drugs. The new guy’s name is Chris. That brings us to the end. If Hillcoat is trying to make a statement about macho male behavior, the police force, capitalism, or even the Russian mob, he fails to do so in this film.

About the quiz

The superficiality of the characters, which makes them easy to forget, is a problem throughout the entire play, but especially in the third act, when it becomes clear that the audience doesn’t care about these people or what will happen to them. Watch the scenes between two of our best actors, Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor, if you subscribe to the theory that people can learn just as much from a bad movie as they can from a good one. In this case, the bad movie is “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Neither one of them has the richness of character or the artistic purpose that these two have previously brought to other films. Therefore, their relationship, which is one of the most important aspects of the movie, has no impact whatsoever. To be fair, Anthony Mackie possesses a great deal of natural charisma, and it occasionally shows through in his performances. Casey Affleck, on the other hand, occasionally gives the impression that he is aware of a better film in which this character could play an important role. It is also important to note that the film succeeds in several action sequences, including an exciting gang shootout, even though the characters have to take a back seat in those scenes. When the dialogue and the increasingly absurd plot begin, the movie starts to fall apart in ways that will make you scratch your head.

Every talented member of the cast of “Triple 9” will eventually move on from the mistakes made in that production and onto bigger and better things. The majority of them have already done so. Follow in their footsteps.
