“Unbroken,” directed by Angelina Jolie, is based on the best-selling biography by Laura Hillenbrand of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was shot down over the Pacific during World War II, survived 47 days on a raft, and was captured and tortured in a Japanese prison camp. Evangelicals were outraged that Zamperini’s post-war struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcoholism were left out of the film. He was saved at a Billy Graham revival and has dedicated his life to sharing his faith.

It has more in common with low-key aesthetics and overly didactic lessons of Sunday school good-for-you movies than with the more ambitious and wide-ranging original. Four years later, the Christian film company Pureflix has produced a sequel to cover those four years. As the title implies, these filmmakers are more concerned with ensuring that you do not miss the message than they are with your emotional connection to the characters or the storyline. It is also preaching to the choir, and it is much more likely to reassure those who are already believers than it is to engage those who are seeking answers with this message.

The events of the first film are quickly recapped in the opening credit sequence, which includes news headlines and photographs. Zamperini (now played by Samuel Hunt) was a high school track star who competed in the 1939 Berlin Olympics, went on to become a bombardier in the United States Army Air Force, and was shot down, presumed dead, and then rescued from a plane crash.

The film begins in Tokyo in 1950, when Zamperini, accompanied by a reporter from TIME Magazine, pays a visit to the prison camp where he was held captive. Before we see what he will do there, we travel back five years to his return home after the war, where he is greeted with the warm welcome that every returning hero deserves from his loving family. He, on the other hand, feels isolated because even those who care about him are unable to comprehend what he has gone through and who he has become.

Compared to his time in the POW camp, where he both supported and was supported by his fellow inmates, he now feels even more alone. One of the only stories he will tell his family is one that will reassure them: how every single day, the men approached him and asked him to describe his mother’s cooking in great detail, down to each and every ingredient, seasoning, smell, and taste. He does not tell them that he has nightmares about the weeks he spent adrift on the raft and about being tortured by the infamous prison commander Mutsuhiro Watanabe, also known as The Bird, during the night.

As part of his tour, Zamperini will tell his story and sell war bonds, as requested by the Army. He begins to drink excessively while on the road, and his Army escort orders him to Miami to “get yourself a suntan and lay off the hooch,” as they put it. On the beach, Zamperini meets Cynthia (Merritt Patterson), and the two fall in love and marry. He will not tell her about his experiences, either, though she gets a hint when he runs out of a movie theater as a newsreel shows scenes of Japanese war criminals on trial plays on the big screen behind him.

About the quiz

When he is unable to find work and Cynthia becomes pregnant, the pressure mounts even higher. When he begins training to compete in the 1948 Olympics, it appears that he has found his calling. However, a fall adds new damage to an old injury, and he is unable to run.

Zamperini is in a state of shock. When he was in training, he tells Cynthia, “I felt whole for the first time in years.” “All the terrible things disappear” when he runs, according to him. All of the horrible things that happened before have returned, and he drinks to keep them from scaring him. When Cynthia takes him to see Billy Graham, played by Graham’s real-life grandson and namesake, Will Graham, he realizes he has reached rock bottom. As an alternative to blaming God for his problems, Zamperini learns to accept God’s forgiveness in order to forgive others.

During a post-credits scene, we see a black and white clip of the real Graham and Zamperini, who have far more heart and spirit than the actors who portray them. Gary Cole, who plays a therapist, and Vanessa Bell Calloway, who plays a sympathetic neighbor, play characters that are more nuanced and fully human than any of the main characters. One of the reasons for this is that too much of the dialogue is taken up with exposition. The attempts at light-hearted banter are just as clumsy as the rest of the show.

In Zamperini’s first nightmare at home, for example, it is encouraging to see Pureflix attempt a more ambitious mainstream story, as well as a more ambitious kind of storytelling. However, it is regrettable that, rather than exploring the universal challenges and complexities of forgiveness, the film chooses to remain within the safer confines of preaching salvation to those who have already been persuaded of their sin.
