“Unbroken,” directed by Angelina Jolie, is based on the best-selling biography by Laura Hillenbrand of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was shot down over the Pacific during World War II, survived 47 days on a raft, and was captured and tortured in a Japanese prison camp. Evangelicals were outraged that Zamperini’s post-war struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcoholism were left out of the film. He was saved at a Billy Graham revival and has dedicated his life to sharing his faith.
It has more in common with low-key aesthetics and overly didactic lessons of Sunday school good-for-you movies than with the more ambitious and wide-ranging original. Four years later, the Christian film company Pureflix has produced a sequel to cover those four years. As the title implies, these filmmakers are more concerned with ensuring that you do not miss the message than they are with your emotional connection to the characters or the storyline. It is also preaching to the choir, and it is much more likely to reassure those who are already believers than it is to engage those who are seeking answers with this message.
The events of the first film are quickly recapped in the opening credit sequence, which includes news headlines and photographs. Zamperini (now played by Samuel Hunt) was a high school track star who competed in the 1939 Berlin Olympics, went on to become a bombardier in the United States Army Air Force, and was shot down, presumed dead, and then rescued from a plane crash.

On the beach, Zamperini meets Cynthia (Merritt Patterson), and the two fall in love and marry. He will not tell her about his experiences, either, though she gets a hint when he runs out of a movie theater as a newsreel shows scenes of Japanese war criminals on trial plays on the big screen behind him.

Zamperini is in a state of shock. When he was in training, he tells Cynthia, “I felt whole for the first time in years.” “All the terrible things disappear” when he runs, according to him. One of the reasons for this is that too much of the dialogue is taken up with exposition. The attempts at light-hearted banter are just as clumsy as the rest of the show.
In Zamperini’s first nightmare at home, for example, it is encouraging to see Pureflix attempt a more ambitious mainstream story, as well as a more ambitious kind of storytelling. However, it is regrettable that, rather than exploring the universal challenges and complexities of forgiveness, the film chooses to remain within the safer confines of preaching salvation to those who have already been persuaded of their sin.
