The best time to become pregnant is never the best time. Anyone who has ever been pregnant can attest to the fact that this is true. When it comes to finances, emotions, and psychology, you’re never going to find a time when all of these factors come together in a perfect storm AND you happen to be ovulating.

With a variety of approaches and a great deal of heart, “Unexpected” tackles this universal phenomenon from several different angles. Initially glanced at, Kris Swanberg’s film appears to be something sentimental and formulaic, similar to what you might see on the Lifetime channel: Cobie Smulders portrays a high school science teacher in inner-city Chicago who discovers she is pregnant at the same time as her star student, a senior who has ambitions to attend college. Cobie Smulders is a member of the Chicago Blacklist. As they attend prenatal yoga classes together, indulge their food cravings together, and support each other through the ups and downs of pregnancy, the two develop an unlikely friendship.

In spite of this, Swanberg manages to maintain a pleasingly low-key tone throughout the film, which is especially true (and blissfully so) during the kinds of moments that are typically played for wacky laughs in pregnancy comedies. For example, peeing on a stick, puking in a trashcan, rushing to the hospital, and so on. And the friendship that develops between Smulders’ Samantha and Gail Bean’s Jasmine, played by Gail Bean, feels tender, genuine, and unforced in its development. Except for a brief moment of fabricated conflict near the end, the relationship between these two expectant mothers, who are at vastly different stages of their lives, is characterized by mutual kindness and compassion.

Samantha encourages all of her students to continue their education, despite the fact that her own situation is in flux. At the end of the school year, the school, which serves a predominantly black student body, will close, effectively putting her out of a job. She lives a modest but fulfilling life with her boyfriend (a quietly supportive Anders Holm from “Workaholics”), with whom she had planned to marry and have children at some point in the near future. When she begins to experience nausea and a pregnancy test results in a positive result, the entire process begins to accelerate.

Around the same time, there is speculation on campus that Jasmine, who is shy and older, is also expecting with her older boyfriend. A baby on the way appears to be jeopardizing the plans of this vivacious, young woman, who currently has a 3.8 grade point average and has set her sights on attending the University of Illinois in the fall. The reality of Jasmine’s financial situation and her unstable childhood are addressed in a matter-of-fact manner by Swanberg, who is working from a script she co-wrote with Megan Mercier.

And that’s pretty much the extent of the plot: we sit back and wait as the big day for them both approaches. As their bellies grow, so does the warm bond that exists between these two would-be mothers. It is not necessary for Swanberg to draw parallels between the characters; rather, she allows each character’s story to unfold with its own set of struggles and doubts. Samantha, like so many other women, is debating the merits of staying at home with the baby versus returning to work, with all of the guilt and what-ifs that come with such a significant decision. (Her well-meaning boyfriend believes that having to care for a newborn baby all day will be a nice break for her, which is hilarious.) Jasmine, on the other hand, is concerned about whether the costs of housing and tuition will be affordable during her child’s early years. Both women are concerned about losing their identities at the same time that they are about to gain a new one, which Swanberg explores with intimacy and clarity.

About the quiz

Ultimately, it is the performances of the film’s lead actresses that give this understated film real substance. The actress, who has been a subtly capable supporting force in the Marvel movie universe for years, exudes wisdom, confidence and heart even as her character is tormented by doubts and doubters of her own. And she and Bean have a lovely, effortless chemistry, which is a real find in Bean’s first major feature film role. Bean exudes a magnetic energy that is tempered by a quiet strength and a steadfast presence.

In terms of cinematic innovation, “Unexpected” isn’t particularly groundbreaking, but through its own honesty and grace, it’s a fascinating watch.
