“Voyagers” follows a group of beautiful young people as they embark on a decades-long interplanetary journey, giving in to their most primal desires. It sounds like a sexy Lord of the Flies episode in space, and it is exactly what it is. In spite of the fact that the themes writer/director Neil Burger is exploring are well-known, his film still manages to maintain a high level of tension and his trademark visual panache.

The film, which is reminiscent of his previous film “Limitless,” which demonstrated to the world that Bradley Cooper was a serious actor and not just a pretty face, tells the story of what happens when people tap into their heightened, true selves, for better or worse. Instead of taking a drug, they try to eliminate one from their systems: a daily beverage known as “The Blue” that they consume. These astronauts believe they are taking a vitamin supplement to help them stay healthy for the long haul, but in reality, they are being evened out and negative tendencies such as jealousy and rage are being suppressed. In Burger’s streamlined sci-fi tale, however, everything is supposedly done for the greater good of mankind.

Earth will become uninhabitable in the not-too-distant future as a result of climate change, drought, and disease. Scientists have discovered a new planet for humans to colonize—the only problem is that it will take 86 years to travel there. Consequently, they breed a crew of brilliant cadets who will board the ship and eventually procreate while on the voyage, with the ultimate goal of having their grandchildren start over in this brave new world. Their ranks include the level-headed Christopher (Tye Sheridan), the inquisitive chief medical officer Sela (Lily-Rose Depp), and the enigmatic Zac (Fionn Whitehead), who is clearly on the verge of becoming a villain just by looking at him with intense eyes and chiseled cheekbones. Among the astronauts is Richard (a tender and grounded Colin Farrell), who has played a crucial role in their upbringing and who is determined to see the mission through, even though he is aware that he will die during the mission’s course.

Burger successfully establishes the rhythms of this place as well as the roles that the members of the crew play in it. While working in their matching midnight blue T-shirts and joggers to make repairs, grow food, and keep themselves fit, they are hustling and bustling, but peaceful at the same time. A trip to the mess hall fountain, where they pour themselves a small glass of a blue beverage that they believe is beneficial to their overall health, is a regular part of their daily routine. However, when Christopher and Zac begin to question its benefits and stop drinking it (and then advise others to do the same), they experience a thrilling sensory awakening that affects everyone in the room, including themselves.

It is similar to the drug montage sequences found in films such as “Requiem for a Dream,” and Burger depicts the rush of experiencing pure emotions for the first time in a zippy and vibrant manner: the joy of running down a hallway, the exertion of playfully wrestling in the gym, and, eventually, the pleasure of touching a member of the opposite sex. (According to reports, there are no gay astronauts on board this mission.) In this type of imagery, you’ve seen many times before: a geyser erupts, pupils shrink and expand, arm hairs stand up on end—the kind of imagery that suggests a cacophony of feelings. A ship that once seemed full of boundless discovery and possibility tightens with claustrophobia and paranoia as dark strings in the score by composer Trevor Gureckis suggest that this reverie will not last for long. In fact, Chilean cinematographer Enrique Chediak makes this sleek, singular location feel both expansive and constricting, forcing you to hurtle through the hallways as if you, too, are being chased by angry, horny teenagers.

Being thrown into the deep end allows the astronauts’ true personalities to shine through, leading to a classic nature versus nurture debate that has been played out countless times. As the cadets gain more self-assurance and curiosity, issues of free will and consent are brought to the forefront of their minds. Burger, on the other hand, does not delve too deeply into these issues; rather, he appears more concerned with keeping the story moving at a brisk pace as characters turn on and attack one another. The first “Divergent” film was directed by Burger, and “Voyagers” has a lot in common with that film in terms of its attractive actors and futuristic, YA-friendly premise.

About the quiz

Within this crucible, the sweet but dreary Christopher emerges as a natural leader, determined to protect his crewmates and keep some semblance of civilisation alive for the sake of the crew. If we may continue with the Lord of the Flies analogy, he is the Ralph figure, and Zac, as his impulsivity and cruel streak take hold, clearly becomes the swaggering, antagonistic Jack figure as a result. In fact, he says to the others at one point, “Anyone who wants to follow me can.” “I’ll go ahead and prepare more food.” However, there isn’t a great deal of nuance to his depravity or his calm ability to lie and spin events to suit his narrative. Sela, played by Depp, manages to keep her wits about her amidst the chaos, but she is given little else to do than serve as the attractive woman they are both fighting over. And the obedient Phoebe (Chanté Adams of “Roxanne Roxanne”), who is constantly shushed when she tries to argue for the sake of reason, serves as the sadly beleaguered Piggy character.

Nonetheless, if Burger was serious about creating an engaging and thought-provoking story, it would have been cool to have her in charge, or anyone other than the two simple, male archetypes he’s created in his own laboratory.

The film is currently showing in theaters.
