The Kendrick brothers have created a film specifically for people who fear God and have been the victims of domestic violence. They are the brother-and-sister filmmaking team of Alex and Stephen Kendrick, whose Christian-themed movies “Fireproof” and “Courageous” made a splash with church-going audiences long before last year’s swath of faith-based independent films were put into production. Alex Kendrick directs and co-wrote this film with brother Stephen. Now that they have made their comeback, the Kendrick brothers are bringing in unexpectedly large sums of money at the box office with their most recent wide release, “War Room.” It may not be as flagrantly offensive as “God’s Not Dead” or as spectacularly inept as “Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas,” but it is still terrible, offering all of the forced humor and superficial substance of a half-baked sermon.

Spirituality is something that lends itself well to the medium of film, but “War Room” shows no interest in connecting with its viewers on a more individual level. It is focused on achieving one objective, which, in the Kendricks’ opinion, is the only goal that truly matters. The purpose of the movie is to convert viewers to a particular ideology by teaching them that they must see everything in a black-and-white light in order to be true believers. It is considered a sign of weakness to struggle with the ambiguities that life throws at us, whereas acting in one’s own self-interest is viewed as nothing more than a sinful and prideful display of egotism.

This is the lesson that real estate agent Elizabeth (Priscilla C. Shirer) needs to learn, and it will be conveyed to her through in-depth conversations with her customer-turned-friend, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie). Clara refuses to listen to Elizabeth when she tries to open up about the unrelenting cruelty that she suffers on a daily basis at the hands of her abhorrent husband, Tony (T.C. Stallings), but she does so anyway. Instead, she counsels the patient wife to go back to their house, clear out a closet, and then write Bible verses all over the walls of the room. Because of this, the area will earn its nickname of “war room” because it is where she will call on God for assistance when fighting her battles. As a submissive woman, her duty is to behave gracefully toward the dominant male in her life, in the hopes that this will one day inspire him to change his ways and become a better person. I pray that she never even entertains the idea of getting a divorce.

The scene that serves as the film’s focal point takes place early on, when Elizabeth is seen sitting and crying in her closet while pleading, “God, help him love me again.” The circumstances surrounding this moment are what make it so painful to experience. They forgot to give Tony any redeeming qualities that would make us want to root for his marriage because the Kendricks have mistaken one-dimensional caricatures for people who actually exist in the real world. This is because the Kendricks have confused people who actually exist with caricatures. One of Elizabeth’s coworkers gives the following piece of advice to women whose husbands beat them: “Learn to duck so God can hit him.” This is the film’s take on what women should do if their husbands beat them.

Satan is the root of all of their marital difficulties, which allows us to reduce their myriad issues to just one. Everything shifts into a different gear after Elizabeth delivers a stirring and verging on psychotic monologue in which she orders the perpetrator of the wrongdoing to leave the house. Tony’s dinner with a woman who might become his mistress is abruptly cut short when God gives him a stomachache and sends him running back into the arms of his wife. Elizabeth is completely unfazed despite the fact that he has been fired from his well-paying job and is facing the possibility of jail time for dirty double-dealing, but before you know it, he has lost his job. Her response is unsettling to him when he asks how she could possibly forgive him for the seemingly never-ending list of wrongs he has committed. She is adamant that she will not end the relationship because she has a deep love for Jesus, and that it is her moral obligation to remain by his side for the rest of her life.

One would think that this is the conclusion of the tale, but the Kendricks still have an additional hour of content to present. Therefore, they include a number of additional motivational monologues and a number of fabricated demonstrations of God’s favor, all of which are strung together in an endless epilogue that is devoid of discernible conflict. Abercrombie is the clear standout in a movie full of performances that are otherwise unremarkable, if only because of her boundless energy. However, she overdoes the old biddy routine to such an intolerable degree that at times she resembles an unsightly hybrid of Steve Urkel and Yoda.

About the quiz

The hypocrisy that is present in both “War Room” and “God’s Not Dead,” the evangelical smash hit from the previous year, is the common thread that connects the two. The film “God Is Not Dead” was a rallying cry for tolerance that, at the same time, defended the bigotry of anti-gay Christians. In “War Room,” there is a sermon that tells us that we are not obligated to be righteous or to pass judgment on others, but the movie itself is extremely judgmental and righteous. If these movies really want to spread the gospel, then they need to get out of their comfort zone and, figuratively speaking, out of the closet. They need to acknowledge that life is significantly more complicated than what is suggested by the typical sermon delivered on Sunday, and that faith is more than just submitting to a life that is governed by fear and authority figures. Before they can even begin to investigate the spiritual realm, they need to first accurately portray the myriad dimensions of the material world. Also, you must try to play this War Room quiz.
