Neiman encounters Terence Fletcher, one of the school’s top teachers, during one of his practice sessions. Fletcher invites Neiman to attend one of his workshops after hearing him play. Neiman gains a lot of confidence from this. In a few days, the young man asks his crush (Nicole) out on a date.
Due to a mistake by the teacher, Neiman arrives at Fletcher’s class three hours early. Upon Fletcher’s arrival, he introduces Neiman as Carl Tanner’s alternative. Neiman sees, however, that Fletcher is harsh to his students fairly quickly. Fletcher offers Neiman a little pep talk during the break.
The teacher humiliates the young man in front of the entire class, and then he leaves the room.
Tanner leaves his music sheet with Neiman during a jazz competition, but he loses it. Neiman replaces Tanner, who was unable to play “Whiplash” from memory. Fletcher tells Neiman that he’s now the key drummer of his band after the concert. This time, Fletcher changes his mind and decides to bring Ryan Connolly into the fold. Connolly secures the role. When Neiman learns that he will no longer be playing alongside Nicole, he trains harder than ever before. He also breaks up with Nicole to focus exclusively on drumming.

During one of his classes, Fletcher gets emotional. Sean Casey, a previous student of Sean’s, passed away (car accident). Fletcher puts Tanner, Connolly, and Neiman in a competition in order to choose the next core drummer for the band. As a result of long hours of practice, Neiman earns a seat on the core drumming staff. Neiman’s bus breaks down on his route to a performance. He rents a car and travels to the concert hall as a result.
We’ve never seen Miles Teller’s, but he plays a musical prodigy in this film.
Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) is a judge, jury, and executioner who enjoys physically and psychologically torturing his students because he wants them to be great.
This well-made, well-acted drama about the world of drumming is written and directed by Damien Chazelle. In the lead role, Teller is strong, though it would be a stretch to suggest either he or Simmons provide award-winning performances. However, both of them have been better off elsewhere.
Drumsticks may or may not fly out of your hands at the end of Whiplash. More than one f*ck-you moment will make you gasp and grin during this film.
Although Whiplash “won” Sundance in 2014, the adulation heaped upon it is a tad excessive. But it’s not really that good. Teller’s character takes a while to warm up to, perhaps because so few can fully relate to and comprehend what he’s going through.
This isn’t the best movie of the year, but it’s a solid drama that deserves to be recognized. Anyone who has ever played the drums knows that it can be both torturous and fascinating. Also, you must try to play this Whiplash quiz.
About the quiz
When he was in the wrong actor’s hands, Fletcher could have been such a caricature in Simmons’s. The role of an unpleasant, over-the-top instructor is fraught with danger. Simmons doesn’t fit into any of them at all. In spite of the brutal mind games and physical abuse that should result in legal charges, we find ourselves pulled to Fletcher’s plight on screen. “Good job” is one of the most hazardous words in the English language. We’re living in an era of praise, where encouragement is the primary teaching technique and every child gets a medal for participation, regardless of whether you think it’s the appropriate method.
Because they were over-watered, have true talents been allowed to wilt? In this film, Simmons masterfully conveys the desire of a man who feels that the only way to manufacture a diamond is to exert an unreasonable amount of pressure.
While Teller and Simmons’ performances alone would make “Whiplash” a noteworthy picture, the film’s tempo elevates it to a new level.
Andrew and Fletcher are often filmed on stage by Tom Cross and Sharone Meir, who cut and pan in sync with the drumbeat. As an action film or thriller, it’s enthralling, especially in its climax, which generates more tension than any other this year. Chazelle’s film is named after a song that is played several times. When it’s over, you’ll feel a sense of awed fatigue, as well.
