“Willy’s Wonderland” has the feel of a film that was conceived while playing a drinking game. In the aftermath of several difficult days, several people decided to challenge each other to come up with the most ridiculous concept they could come up with and have it produced. These two men were chosen as the winners of this game. They are the writers and directors of a film that appears to be far too enjoyable in its own right to fail. Consider the possibility that a vengeful Nicolas Cage appeared in the video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” wreaking havoc and devastation. There will also be characters and tonal choices that will evoke the classic films of the 1980s like “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” thrown in for good measure (well, the sequels more than the originals). That sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?!?! What could possibly go wrong? That’s all there is to it. There is a lot that could go wrong.

Choosing the Cage Rage Package, which does not include dialogue, is one of the many things that could go horribly wrong. The fact that the star of “Mandy” and “Color Out of Space,” you know, the one who is known for completely committed line readings of even the most ridiculous material, does not have a single line of dialogue in this action/horror film, is one of the major twists of “Willy’s Wonderland” that feels necessary to convey to potential viewers. Though going for a strong/silent combination a la the Western heroes that people like Clint Eastwood defined is an option, that isn’t really what Cage is doing in this film. Certainly, he has the snarl and the stare down, but he looks more like a zombie than something out of a horror movie. In some of his recent choices, Cage has been accused of sleepwalking through the proceedings, relying on the kitschy goodwill generated by his viral clips from other films to do half of his acting for him. That has never been more true than it is right now.

During his time on the road, Cage is captured by a group of locals in a small town, which includes the sheriff, who is played by Beth Grant. It is agreed that a deal will be struck when the drifter is informed that his car repair will require cash that the drifter does not have on hand. In exchange for spending the night cleaning up the rundown family entertainment complex known as Willy’s Wonderland, the car repair will be provided at no additional cost to the customer. Of course, viewers are made aware from the beginning that the plan is for our hero to never make it out of Wonderland in one piece. You see, the animatronic puppets there come to life every now and then, and they require a sacrifice in order to continue to function properly. Meanwhile, Liv (Emily Tosta), a young girl with a connection to the Wonderland, persuades her friends to accompany her on a mission to burn down the park once and for all. But first, they must save the new janitor. He is not in need of saving.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Willys Wonderland quiz.

Eventually, after an interminable set-up, “Willy’s Wonderland” gets to the good stuff, which lasts approximately 40 minutes. In it, Liv’s friends are sliced up by animatronic creatures that look like they were designed in 1978, after which they themselves are torn to pieces by Nicolas Cage’s brutal drifter. Unfortunately, the horror elements are underdeveloped, and the action is so poorly choreographed that it’s difficult to tell what’s going on half of the time. Additionally, there is absolutely no tension or danger. Despite my reservations about some of Rob Zombie’s work, I was reminded of his ability to inject some of his personality into films with outlandish concepts like this (think “House of 1,000 Corpses” or “31”) by watching this. They were expecting Cage to bring his entire personality to the table. He did not do so.

Neither did the rest of his ensemble (although Tosta could have done a better job with the material), but this is more a result of the writing than anything else. The majority of the cast is comprised of people who are stupid enough to have sexual relations with a cursed Chuck. E. Cheese recalls similar idiots who ignored characters like Jason or Freddy in bad movies in the ’80s—the origin story of the Wonderland is reminiscent of “Elm Street”—but it’s difficult to tell whether this is deliberate or simply the kind of bad horror writing/acting that we don’t see as often these days as we did in the days of “Jason Takes Manhattan.”

Believe me when I say that after a long week, I was in the mood for a silly but entertaining film featuring a major action star going head to head with killer animatronic puppets. It appears to be a straightforward formula for having a good time. I realized that none of this was enjoyable around the time that Cage was attacking a giant gorilla with a plunger and then kicking in his brain against a urinal. Consider throwing a birthday party for the elementary school classmate who you disliked the most. It’s a get-together. What could possibly go wrong? It’s terrible. It has the potential to be extremely dangerous.
