Despite the fact that Witness is billed as a thriller, it is so much more than that. In fact, I wish they hadn’t even used the word “murder” in the advertising for it. First and foremost, this is an enthralling and heartfelt love story that will leave you breathless. The film then becomes a meditation on the choices we make in life as well as the choices that other people make on our behalf. Only after that does it become a thriller – one that Alfred Hitchcock would have been proud to direct and produce.

The first act of the movie establishes the plot, giving the audience plenty of time to interact with and learn about the characters. An Amish settlement in Pennsylvania, where a self-sufficient religious community has proudly maintained the ways of their forefathers, serves as the setting for the film’s opening sequence. It is widely believed that the Amish are deeply suspicious of outsiders and that they are steadfastly committed to their rural lifestyle, which includes horse and carriage, communal barn-raising, gas lanterns rather than electricity, and hooks rather than buttons.

Editor’s Picks

An Amish man passes away. His widow and young son board a train and set off on a journey. A murder takes place in the Philadelphia train station, and the little boy is there to witness it. He plays the tough big city detective who is assigned to the case. Harrison Ford is excellent in the role. He creates lineups in the hopes that the child will be able to identify the murderer. He shows the child mug shots of himself. In the following days, it is revealed that the police department itself is involved in the murder. In an ambush, Ford comes dangerously close to being killed. His life, as well as the lives of the widow and her son, is in imminent danger. He is able to drive them all back to the Amish lands of Pennsylvania before collapsing from the loss of blood he has suffered.

And it is at this point that the film really begins to take shape. As a thriller, “Witness” has been a slick and superior production up until the return to Pennsylvania. Now it transforms into a love story that is both intelligent and perceptive. No, this isn’t one of those romances in which the man and woman fall into each other’s arms simply because their hormones are programmed to do so. The film revolves around the relationship of two independent, complicated people who grow to love each other as a result of their shared danger, their ability to work together, their mutual respect for one another, and their physical attraction for one another, which is so strong that it almost becomes a separate character in the film.

“Witness” was directed by Peter Weir, the talented Australian director of “The Year of Living Dangerously.” Weir is also the writer and producer of the film. He has a strong and certain sense of place, of the land, and of the way that people build their self-esteem by the way they go about their work. Throughout the entire middle section of this film, he depicts the contrast between the man from the city and the simple Amish women in the context of the Amish community as a whole. Even without the thriller elements, it is a masterful piece of filmmaking that captures our attention. Even if the love story were to stand alone, it would be captivating. The ways of life in the Amish community have been so meticulously documented that they have the feel of a documentary. However, because all three elements work so well together, something organic is taking place; we are immersed in the story itself.

About the quiz

No other actor has ever given a better performance in a film than Harrison Ford. A luminous simplicity emanates from Kelly McGillis, the young actress who plays the Amish widow; it is refreshing and even subtly erotic to see a woman who does not subscribe to all of the standard man-woman programmed responses that are prevalent in modern society.

There is nothing cliché about the love that begins to blossom between them; the cultural divide that separates them is at least as important to both of them as the feelings they are experiencing. Because this kiss is a sharing of trust and passion, rather than a simple plug-in element from your standard kit of movie images, when they finally kiss, it is a gloriously sensuous moment.

With so many pallid, bloodless little movies coming out lately – mostly recycled teenage exploitation films made by ambitious young stylists with no thought in their heads – “Witness” feels like a breath of fresh air. It is a film about adults who have dignity in their lives and whose decisions are important to them. This is also a thrilling thriller in every sense of the word.
