Because of the dramatic changes that have occurred since Bryan Singer’s “X-Men” was released in 2000, the superhero genre now finds itself in a precarious position. The widespread devastation of entire cities that has become the hallmark of so many third acts has become visually rote and morally abhorrent. And how many more movies can we take about white men who have been given great power and who are equally adept at delivering jokes and punches? Not only does the genre require more diversity in terms of race and gender, but it also requires more diversity in terms of the types of stories on which filmmakers choose to focus. When you consider that the ensemble of “X-Men: Apocalypse” allows for the opportunity to focus on popular female and people of color characters, it should be considered a corrective measure. As a result, it magnifies all of the genre’s worst flaws and serves up an old-fashioned story that would have been out of date five years ago.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is a jumbled, bloated shambles of a motion picture. There are several films crammed into one, all vying for attention, and none of them are successful; the film lacks a strong central storyline or emotional core to it. The first hour is almost entirely devoted to introducing new players and establishing what the veterans are up to in their respective games. Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy) is running his school for mutant children with great success. Raven Darkholme/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) is a superhero who works on her own to save mutants, including the walking punchline Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), while also dealing with the pressure of being viewed as a hero. Then there are the adolescent Scott Summers/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), who are struggling to deal with their newly discovered powers as well as their developing feelings for one another. Sheridan and Turner appear to be having a good time, but their development is slowed by the weight of everything else going on around them; Jean’s struggle with the dark side of her abilities provides particularly fertile ground for development. One of the few evocative scenes is when she has a nightmare that causes the school to shake and the walls of her room to burn before Xavier comes to her rescue and comforts her. Despite the fact that she has a major hero moment at the conclusion, it doesn’t land well given how poorly she has been developed. Singer doesn’t give the few interesting moments in the film enough breathing room to develop. He’s far too preoccupied with speeding to the next plot point, the next introduction, or the next fight scene to notice anything else.

Editor’s Picks

The most egregious sin committed by “X-Men: Apocalypse” is the way it squanders the talents of some of the greatest modern actors.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this X Men Apocalypse quiz.

Magneto’s storyline lacks the emotional depth that Michael Fassbender is capable of providing. Is it possible for any actor to divert attention away from the fact that that storyline embodies the most onerous cliché when it comes to the treatment of women in comic books? Can you imagine how many more wives and daughters will be killed in these types of films in order to provide some angst for the male lead?

Oscar Isaac, who plays Apocalypse, the movie’s world-destroying, god-like mutant, struggles to make Apocalypse even the slightest bit threatening. How is it possible for an actor with Isaac’s charisma and energy to feel so stale in this situation? The script by Simon Kinberg, to a large extent, is to blame for Apocalypse’s inability to engage the audience. In contrast to their comic book counterparts, these operatic, world-destroying villains don’t appear to work as well on screen. Their motivations are, at the very least, muddled and nonsensical. They appear to be so disconnected from the world in which the heroes are traveling that they appear to be in entirely different films. As a comic book adaptation, “X-Men: Apocalypse” may also exhibit the negative characteristics that characterize these types of stories in the comics, which can be damningly inert, nihilistic, and overcrowded on their own, before even being adapted for the screen. Although Apocalypse has a complicated backstory and is known for his grandstanding, he spends more time imbuing his Four Horsemen with power than he does wielding his own.

the smug but forgettable Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and a young Storm make up the rest of the Apocalypse’s team (Alexandra Shipp). There is nothing particularly interesting about any of these characters, but Psylocke and Storm exemplify the ways in which this entire series has failed its female characters; Psylocke is such a one-dimensional villain that she appears to be just two steps away from sporting a mustache. When it comes to developing more than one female character at a time, Singer and Kinberg appear to be completely incapable.

About the quiz

The fact that a series uses the language and ideas of the Civil Rights Movement while not caring one iota about its characters of color is also deeply concerning. Storm is given little to do for the second consecutive time. She possesses none of the emotional interiority, swagger, or complexity that her comic counterpart possesses. Jubilee (Lana Condor) is such a non-factor that she could be completely removed from the picture and nothing would change at all. It is only slightly better for Raven and Jean, but Jean’s development is too inconsistent to have a significant impact. Raven comes across as far worse as a result of Lawrence’s obvious disinterest in the role, as she coasts from scene to scene with none of her trademark charisma on display. When Raven reverts to her natural blue form (which is probably one of the worst translations of a character from the page to the screen in modern comic book films), her performance somehow becomes even more uninteresting and uninteresting.

While much has been said about how superhero films rely on the destruction of cities in order to raise the stakes for the heroes, “X-Men: Apocalypse” takes this concept to an entirely new level of brutality with its use of explosive violence. In this case, it is not just one city that is in jeopardy, but the entire world as well. The devastation in the third act is so extensive and cataclysmic that it completely depletes the film of any tension it might have had. There is no sense of danger in this place; instead, there is the distinct impression that nearly everyone involved is counting down the minutes until this whole ordeal is finally over.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” has one visually interesting scene that involves the unexpectedly amusing Quicksilver (Evan Peters), which is one of the film’s only visually interesting scenes. When an explosion occurs at Xavier’s school, he uses his super-speed to navigate through the building, which is set to the song “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by The Eurythmics, which is, to say the least, a confounding choice of music. Quicksilver’s ingenious ways of saving everyone provide some physical humor and levity, which Singer appreciates.

However, it is the only scene in a film that is nearly 150 minutes in length that comes close to evoking the brightly colored, zany nature that comic books can delve into at their most enjoyable when done well. It isn’t enough to save what turns out to be an emotionally empty and morally confused film in the final analysis. In addition to being the lowest point in Singer’s series, “X-Men: Apocalypse” is one of the most visually obnoxious superhero films to have been released in recent memory.
