That particular line from “Dark Phoenix,” the final chapter in a franchise that has seen incredible highs and incredible lows but has never seen a film in which it felt like nobody cared, is one of those rare instances when a character speaks dialogue that so perfectly captures the critically flawed foundation of a film as completely as that particular line from the final chapter of “Dark Phoenix.” Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut, allegedly intended as a send-off to the characters and cast introduced over the course of “X-Men: First Class,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” has absolutely nothing going on beneath the surface, and that’s also pretty bland. It is a joyless, lifeless, and boring affair that recycles ideas from earlier X-Men films and comes across as more of an obligatory cash grab than a thoughtful farewell to iconic characters.
The psychic powers of Jean Grey manifested in a way that caused her mother to fall asleep at the wheel when she was a child, which resulted in their deaths in a car accident when she was a child. She was taken in by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), who knew he could raise her in such a way that she could control her powers, and she eventually became a member of the mutant team, played by Sophie Turner when she’s an older teenager. As seen in the first few minutes of “Dark Phoenix,” the X-Men are sent on a rescue mission to save the crew of a space shuttle that has spun out of control. Jean Grey, Professor X, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) all join forces to fight the villains of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the following sequence is the best sequence in the film, as the X-Men work together to save the crew, giving each of them a brief moment to shine in the process. In the end, Jean is forced to bear the brunt of what appears to be a solar flare at first glance, but which turns out to be some sort of interstellar, planet-destroying force. And that force has now taken up residence within Jean.

Jean has been dubbed “the Phoenix” by some because of the way she eluded death, and she now possesses unusual abilities that she is unable to control. Phoenix is also plagued by flashbacks to her past that Professor X assisted her in repressing, and the combination of her new rage abilities and a sense of betrayal by her father figure leads her to the dark side. In addition, our heroine’s involvement in the murder of someone she once loved is not helped by an alien being named Vuk (who takes over Jessica Chastain’s body) who encourages Phoenix to go all space-mental. All of this results in Magneto (Michael Fassbender) returning to the fold, and a whole lot of things go boom and bam as a result of it. Avoid “Dark Phoenix” if you are even the slightest bit put off by the trend of blockbuster climaxes that exist almost solely to show CGI versions of things smashing into each other in the final moments.

Besides that, there are plenty of other reasons to avoid the “Dark Phoenix” as well. Subtext is present in the best “X-Men” films (which are frequently about outsiders), but “Dark Phoenix” is a flat text-based film. All of the characters express themselves and their needs at all times, resulting in dialogue that becomes so repetitive that it becomes numb for the LONG stretches between poorly-directed action sequences (there’s one in which the X-Men fight while attempting to cross a street that is almost comically bad in terms of choreography, for example). Whenever people say generic Comic Book Movie Mad-Libs phrases like “When I lose control, bad things happen… to the people I love,” it’s hard not to hope that Magneto/Fassbender will say something remotely witty or, dare we hope, whimsical in response. While it’s true that Wolverine/Jackman brought a certain amount of levity to the previous films, it is astonishing that no one considered that perhaps someone else should fill that role in this one….

It’s most likely due to the fact that everyone was too bored to care. Jennifer Lawrence is a wonderful actress when the material is right for her, but she simply cannot be persuaded to feign excitement about reprising this role for a third time as part of a contractual obligation. With her usual ability to bring depth and nuance to everything she does, Jessica Chastain becomes lost in a non-character in this movie. McAvoy and Fassbender show glimmers of the life they once instilled in these characters, but comparing their performances in “First Class” and “Days of Future Past” is like comparing an athlete at the beginning and end of their professional career. It’s just that the heart isn’t there. Moreover, as a person who does not believe in being mean to young performers, I’ll simply state that Ms. Turner has not been directed in a manner which convinces me that she can carry a film. Her portrayal of Grey/Phoenix strays so far from what made the character interesting in the comic books that they aren’t really the same character in the first place. When it comes down to it, one of the most fundamental problems with “Dark Phoenix” is that, while the film is purportedly about a woman whose emotions become dangerous, Turner fails to convey a single human emotion that feels relatable at all. Rather than a human or even a mutant who has lost control of her powers, she appears to be more like an android that has gone awry. Jean Grey’s descent into the dark side must be fueled by powerful, relatable, and passionate emotion on her part. Basically, it’s just an actress covered in CGI swirls in this scene.
