Is it really necessary for the United States to watch a follow-up to the send-up that Ben Stiller starred in and directed back in 2001 about the fashion and supermodeling industries, as well as the seemingly never-ending vacuity that exists within those industries? During approximately the first twenty minutes of “Zoolander 2,” the answer is a pretty straightforward “no.” The sequel, which is once again directed by and stars Stiller (in the title role of Derek Zoolander, whose skull is so thoroughly empty that to call him a “airhead” would be an insult to air), along with Owen Wilson as counterpart dimbulb male model Hansel, and many others from the original cast, begins with a joke that has already been overplayed in the trailers. Zoolander 2: The Men Who Stare at Goats stars Stiller (in the title role of Derek Zoolander, That is, the “assassination” of pop star Justin Bieber, who, before he saunters off this mortal coil, takes a selfie while making a signature “look” similar to that of Derek Zoolander. The “whatever happened to?” sequence that is about to follow features multiple media personalities. Every notable TV news personality, with the possible exception of Brian Williams, contributes a sound bite to the story, which is about a potentially tasteless fictional disaster that befalls a construction in the heart of downtown Manhattan close to the Hudson River. The name of the location, “Extreme Northern New Jersey,” appears in the bottom right corner of the screen as the audience is shown a mountain hideout in a snowy and windy setting. Even though I’m a sucker for a good Jersey joke, I wasn’t really hooked by the story.
I was, however, able to in the end. “Zoolander 2” is not only unrelenting in its jokes, but it is also unrelentingly clever in the way that it debunks itself as the film progresses. As it jumped from one pointless plot device to another, followed by a parody of a 1980s music video and another pointless plot point, I found myself thinking, “This is hardly a movie.” But the observations about the fashion world got, if not sharper (I don’t know enough about the contemporary fashion world to vouch for accuracy), then definitely more pointed, beginning with Kyle Mooney’s portrayal of a popular new designer named Don Atari whose aesthetic opinions on how much everything “sucks” and is “stupid.” Derek and Hansel have been convinced to take part in Atari’s fashion show in Rome by an old friend named Billy Zane. The show will be lorded over by a spectacularly pompous couture doyen named Alexanya Atoz, who will be played by a nearly unrecognizable Kristen Wiig. Atoz’s shtick consists of deliberately butchering the pronunciation of English words, and this aspect of his performance is emphasized with almost the same level of vigor as Derek’s moronic behavior. As it turns out, the scenes in which Derek “doesn’t get” something are the ones that present the film with the greatest potential for comic risk. And this is completely the case with lot once Penelope Cruz, playing a member of the Fashion Crime Division of Interpol, involves him and Hansel in a mission to save the world (or something like that). The character is quite literally so stupid that it is not funny, except that it becomes funny due to the fact that it is not funny, and so on and so forth.

And to tell you the truth, once that happens, it gets very funny—so funny, in fact, that when my wife saw how much I was laughing, she thought I was going to have a stroke because I was laughing so much. I was also laughing so hard that it made it impossible for me to take notes. So, what else can I tell you about the movie that you don’t already know? Because there are so many cameos in the damn thing, you may eventually find yourself wondering why it isn’t possible for you to appear in it. The segment in which Benedict Cumberbatch appears as an apparently pan-gender supermodel named “All” does flirt with the idea of skirting ideological objectionability, but on the other hand, every character and personage depicted in this movie is utterly, one might even say abjectly, ridiculous, so for “All” to be depicted as not ridiculous might have constituted a progressively active judgment, but it also would have been on the inconsistent side of things. Also, this is a movie that makes an elaborate joke about the prospect of a 13-year-old boy having his heart carved out of his chest, and the real-life denizens of the real-life fashion world attaining eternal youth by drinking his blood. That is indeed how it should be read. Cyrus Arnold, a very nervous preteen, plays the role of Derek’s wayward and purposefully chubby son. This is where the fashion villain Mugatu, played by Will Ferrell, comes into play, along with additional cameos and other guest stars.

Owen Wilson, in particular, is given more and more opportunities to unwind his seemingly inexhaustible comic genius. Because of this, it might be easy to miss the fact that “Zoolander 2” bites a certain hand with more perspicacity than that displayed in Stiller’s 2008 I-hate-Hollywood effort “Tropic Thunder.” As the action gets more furious, Owen Wilson is given more and more opportunities to unwind his comic genius. It takes a special something to persuade high-profile individuals like Tommy Hilfiger and Alexander Wang to appear in a film in which they play themselves and portray those selves as eager to take part in cannibalism and murder as part of a ritual. The insult to fashionistas comes off as completely sincere despite the fact that “Zoolander 2” has indulged in so many inversions of its narrative by this time that it sounds pretty heavy-handed as satire goes. But this would make a much better discussion topic for some future film studies course at an Ivy League university than it does for this review.
