The Edwin Epps House is a halt on Northrup’s Trail and is now situated on Louisiana State University’s campus. The 1852 completion of the home was made possible by the labor of Samuel Bass and Solomon Northup. In 1841, a free African-American man named Solomon Northup was a fiddler in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he also resided with his wife and two kids. Brown and Hamilton, two white men, promise him a temporary job as a musician in Washington, D.C.; however, they drug Northup and hand him over to James H. Birch, the owner of a slave pen. When Northup asserts to be free, he is brutally beaten.
