A retired judicial investigator named Benjamn Espósito (Ricardo Darn) decides to write a novel about a murder that occurred in 1974 and in whose investigation he was involved in 1999. There will be a memory later: Benjamn Espósito starts looking into the gruesome murder and assassination of a young woman named Liliana Colotto de Morales (Carla Quevedo) inside her home in a Buenos Aires neighborhood in June of 1974. Ricardo Morales (Pablo Rago), her now-widow, is devastated by the tragedy; Espósito promises to track down the murderer and bring him to justice. This is supported by his assistant Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella) and the new department head, a young woman of sheltered origin named Irene Menendez-Hastings (Soledad Villamil). Espósito’s adversary in court, Romano, accuses two immigrant workers in order to distract himself from the matter. After learning that both had been tortured in order to be found guilty, Espósito engages in a fight with a colleague in the courtroom’s hallways. Immediately, Espósito discovers a trap when he looks at old photographs of the murdered young woman that Morales had given to him: many of the pictures feature a man named Isidoro Gómez (Javier Godino), who is seen suspiciously staring at the victim. Espósito looks into Gómez and discovers that he lives and works in the city of Buenos Aires, but he is unable to be found. In Chivilcoy, the city where not only the victim, Liliana Colotto, but also Espósito and Sandoval were born, they enter the mother of Gómez’s home there illegally. During the allanamiento, some letters that the suspect wrote to his mother were discovered. When they return, Espósito is informed that Sandoval has stolen the items. Returning to the Federal Capital, the “visit” only causes them problems with their superiors and they are unable to obtain any supporting documentation in the correspondence. Additionally, Gómez continues to be free as a result of Morales’ desperate attempt to track down the person responsible for his wife’s murder calling his mother on the phone. After these events, the investigation into the young woman’s murder is closed.

After some time, in 1975, Espósito finds Morales at a train station in Retiro and learns that Morales spent the entire year traveling to various train stations in Capital Federal in an effort to track down Gómez when he returned from work. Morales’ tenacity and his love for his disabled wife moved Espósito, who succeeded in persuading Irene to restart the investigation. While drinking in a pub, Sandoval discovers something: a well-known patron of the establishment recognizes several names mentioned in the cards—without any apparent connection—as Racing Club of Avellaneda football players. Espósito and Sandoval go to a game between Racing and Huracán after recognizing him as a supporter of that team in the hopes of running into Gómez. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this El Secreto De Sus Ojos quiz. Espósito and Sandoval locate Gómez in the crowd while keeping an eye on the spectators at a game being played at the Huracán stadium, but a recurrent goal causes enough of a commotion for Gómez to huya. A pursuit begins in which Gómez nearly escapes, but is ultimately apprehended thanks to police assistance when he unintentionally enters the field of play and collides with a Racing player. Then, Espósito and Irene subject him to a phony and illegal interrogation in the office, during which Irene succeeds in getting Gómez to confess to the crime by undermining his sense of masculinity. Gómez is found guilty and sentenced, but only a month later Espósito’s competitor Romano succeeds in getting the murderer freed and hires him as a stooge for the right wing of his political party to exact revenge on Espósito. Esposito and Irene attempt to correct this, but Romano’s intervention prevents it. Espósito is given the difficult task of telling Morales that the person who killed his wife will remain at large, which leaves the man in ruins.

A few weeks later, Sandoval engages in a fight with another man in the bar where he frequently frequents, and Espósito takes him to his apartment while he searches for Sandoval’s wife. When Espósito returns to the apartment with her, he discovers Sandoval dead in his room, the door forced open, and his pictures turned around. After that, Espósito comes to the conclusion that Romano sent assailants to the field to try to kill him and that when he ran into Sandoval, he turned back to the photos and pretended to be Espósito in order to save his friend. Espósito, fearing for his life, is forced to flee to Jujuy with Irene’s children in order to avoid Romano’s assassins. Espósito leaves the city and lives in Jujuy for ten years before returning to Buenos Aires in 1985 and discovering Gómez missing, Romano murdered during the 1976 military dictatorship, and Irene married and the mother of two children. Returning to 1999 (the year in which the story is described) and attempting to make sense of the situation, Espósito visits Morales, who moved to an isolated home outside of the Province of Buenos Aires in 1975. Both parties talk about various events that happened both during and after the case during the visit, but Morales loses control after Espósito asks him how he overcame the death of his wife and more specifically, the injustice that led to the end of his cause. Morales informs Espósito that he had already been tasked with locating Gómez and placing him in the car’s luggage compartment. As a result, Espósito leaves. Pero tras una profunda reflexión guiada por recuerdos, detiene el coche y se dirige campo a través, de regreso a la house de Morales, al recordar lo que Sandoval le había dicho: “Nadie puede cambiar de pasión”. Espósito was able to understand Morales’ fear that Gómez would endure an eternal prison sentence rather than be instantly saved by death. Thus, it was determined that it was impossible for the damned to have “given the go-ahead” to their aggressor.

About the quiz

After waiting until the afternoon, Morales is discovered entering a small granero with a plate of tiny pieces of bread. Espósito moves forward and looks behind the door. Morales is carrying the meal to a darkened table where a decrepit man emerges. It turns out that this man is the assassin Gómez, who Morales has been holding captive and feeding for 25 years without uttering a single word to. Gómez, hiding inside his celda, is startled to see Espósito letting go of his bandeja before approaching him and pleading with him to ask Morales “that even if he is silent,” he speaks. Morales, acting seriously, stops short of telling Espósito: “You said forever,” in reference to the promise to imprison him made by the previous person. After that, he heads over to Irene’s house with the intention of confessing his love to her, which is what she had always expected from him. Expectant and sombre, they gather in the office and close the door.
