Jeanne and her twin brother Simon visit with French Canadian notary Jean Lebel, their mother’s employer and family friend, after the passing of their mother Nawal, an Arab immigrant in Canada. Nawal’s will mentions not keeping a promise, denying her a proper gravestone and casket unless Jeanne and Simon find their mysterious brother, whose existence they were previously ignorant of, and their father, whom they thought was deceased. Nawal has left two letters, one of which is to be delivered to Jeanne and Simon’s father and the other to their sibling. Simon, on the other hand, appears to have had a more difficult relationship with Nawal and her seemingly unusual personality, and is hesitant to join Jeanne on this quest. A series of flashbacks show that Nawal was born into a Christian Arab family in an unnamed Middle Eastern country and fell in love with a refugee called Wahab, which resulted in her pregnancy. Her family murders her lover and nearly shoots her as an act of honor, but her grandmother saves her by making her vow to leave the village after the birth of her child and begin a new life in the fictional city of Daresh. The grandma tattoos the baby’s heel and places him in an orphanage.

While Nawal is attending university in Daresh, a civil war and war crimes erupt, and Nawal opposes the war on human rights principles. Chamseddine, a Muslim militant, destroys her son’s orphanage in Kfar Khout and turns him into an Islamic child soldier. After nearly escaping the massacre of Muslim refugees on a bus by Christian Nationalists, Nawal joins the Muslim fighters and ultimately shoots a nationalist leader. She is imprisoned in Kfar Ryat and violated by torturer Abou Tarek, giving birth to the twins as a result. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Incendies quiz. After visiting her mother’s homeland, Jeanne progressively uncovers this past and persuades Simon to accompany her. They discover their brother’s name is Nihad of May and track down Chamseddine with the help of Lebel. Simon personally meets with him and exposes the war-crazed Nihad was kidnapped by the nationalists, tortured, and sent to Kfar Ryat, where he assumed the name Abou Tarek, rendering him the twins’ half-brother and father; as such, both letters are addressed to the same person. Nihad’s superiors, like Nawal’s, gave him a new existence in Canada after the war. Nawal happened upon him at a Canadian swimming pool and noticed both the tattoo and his visage. The shock of discovering the reality caused Nawal to have a stroke, which resulted in her decline and untimely death at the age of sixty.

The twins track down Nihad in Canada and hand over Nawal’s notes to him. He opens both of them; the first note is filled with contempt and addresses him as the twins’ father, the rapist. The second letter, instead of addressing him as the twins’ brother, is written with loving words, stating that he, as Nawal’s son, is deserving of affection. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Incendies quiz. Nawal receives her headstone. Nihad returns some time later.
