Tatsuo Kusakabe, a university professor, and his daughters Satsuki and Mei—who are about ten and four years old, respectively—move into a dilapidated home near the hospital where the girls’ mother Yasuko is undergoing treatment for a protracted sickness in the 1950s. Susuwatari, small, dark, and dust-like house spirits, can be seen when moving from light to dark areas of the home.[note 1] The susuwatari depart to find another empty house once the girls are at ease in their new home. Mei comes across two tiny ghosts one day who guide her into the hollow of a sizable camphor tree. She makes friends with a larger spirit that introduces itself to her by making a succession of roars that she recognizes as “Totoro.” Mei, who mispronounces the word “troll,” believes that Totoro is the troll from her picture novel Three Billy Goats Gruff. Mei falls unconscious while riding Totoro, but Satsuki discovers her on the ground. Mei tries her best, but she is unable to display her family’s Totoro tree. She is consoled by Tatsuo’s assurance that Totoro will come out when he wants to.
