After a shoemaker has fixed Zahra’s pink shoes, the movie opens with Ali retrieving them. In order to purchase some potatoes, he leaves them unattended. A homeless man picks up the shoes that were concealed in a bag while he is distracted, assuming it is trash, and he takes them away. The young boy knocks over vegetable plates in his haste to locate the shoes, believing they fell behind the crates, and the grocer chases him away. Ali is afraid to inform his parents about the incident because they are struggling financially and live in a poor South Tehran neighborhood. The landlord argues with Ali’s mother because she is five months behind on the rent, and the grocer has not been paid in a while either. Ali informs Zahra about the shoes and begs her not to tell their mother; she agrees. That evening, Ali’s father chastises him for ignoring his sick mother’s request for assistance. The brothers passed notes to each other while they were working on their homework, discussing what to do. They devise a scheme to share Ali’s Converse sneakers: Zahra will wear them to school in the morning and return them to Ali at midday so he can attend afternoon classes. When Ali performs well on a test, his teacher rewards him with a gold pen along with the other students in his class who earned high grades. He gives the pen to Zahra as partial compensation for her lost shoes. No matter how hard he tries, Ali is late three times in a row due to the awkward arrangement he and his sister have. The principal ignores him the first time, warns him the second time, and instructs Ali to leave and return with his father, who is at work trying to make money. Ali’s teacher, observing Ali’s tears, convinces the principal that Ali is the top student in his class and should be given another opportunity, allowing him to return to class.Editor’s Picks

When Ali gets back home, Zahra is there to greet him. His sister, however, is summoned away by their mother before he can express his disappointment in his performance in the race to her. A brief shot of the children’s father riding home on his bicycle in a different scenario reveals some of his purchases, including a pair of white and a pair of pink shoes.
