A young woman visits the gravesite of a famous author known only as “Author” in a cemetery in the former country of Zubrowka while reading his most treasured work, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Written in 1985, the book describes his trip to the formerly opulent but now-drab hotel in 1968. He encounters Zero Moustafa, the business’s owner, who shares his rags to riches tale over dinner. Zero is the recently recruited lobby boy at the upscale Grand Budapest Hotel in 1932. The hotel’s meticulous concierge, Monsieur Gustave H., woos elderly, affluent customers, including the 84-year-old dowager Madame D., with whom he has been having an affair for almost two decades. One month after her last hotel stay, she suddenly passes away. At Madame’s Schloss Lutz estate, Gustave and Zero meet up with her remaining family members to hear her attorney Deputy Vilmos Kovacs read her will. A new codicil to the will, according to Kovacs, leaves Gustave a priceless Renaissance painting called Boy with Apple. Dmitri, the enraged son of Madame D., calls for Gustave’s arrest. After hiding the artwork inside the Grand Budapest, Gustave and Zero depart.

Then Gustave is persuaded to take part in the jail escape. Agatha, an apprentice baker at Mendl’s and Zero’s fiancée, makes pastries that Gustave has Zero stuff with hammers, chisels, and sawblades. The guard in charge of screening outside foods for contraband cannot bring himself to tear open the pastries to check for substance because they are well-known works of art, allowing the pastries to pass through security check. Jopling, hired by Dmitri, tracks their movements while also killing Kovacs, Madame D’s butler Serge X, and Serge X’s sister in his quest to assassinate Gustave.
