Initial [edit] A con artist posing as “Count Fujiwara” in Japanese-occupied Korea intends to seduce Lady Hideko, a Japanese heiress, marry her, and take her to an asylum in order to steal her fortune. He employs Sook-hee, a pickpocket, to serve as Hideko’s housekeeper and persuade her to marry him. Hideko resides with her Uncle Kouzuki, a Korean who cooperated with the Japanese in order to obtain a gold mine. Kouzuki then sells forgeries to fund his fixation with rare books, accumulating more money and books. Helping Hideko get ready to recite for Kouzuki’s guests is Sook-hee’s primary responsibility. After returning from a reading agitated, Hideko insists that Sook-hee bed next to her. Under the guise of getting Hideko ready for her marriage to the Count, the two wind up having a sexual encounter. After leaving Sook-hee at the asylum, Fujiwara and Hideko share a meal together in a posh hotel where he shares stories from his past and begs her to marry him once more, this time as Sook-hee. In addition, he says that Sook-hee will pass away in a few days, which makes Hideko wonder what Fujiwara really wants. Bok-soon, a companion of Sook-hee, starts a fire at the asylum and pretends to be a firefighter in order to save her. While a flashback reveals that Hideko cut her own hand with a knife to smear blood on her sheets and refuse to consummate the marriage, Fujiwara makes up a tale about making love on their wedding night. Fujiwara persuades Kouzuki to accept one of his cigarettes in exchange for more information, after which he disgustingly declines to provide any more information. Fujiwara admits that his cigarettes were laced with mercury, and the toxic gas in the smoke kills both of them after Kouzuki sees that the cigarettes are emitting blue smoke.
