He employs Sook-hee, a pickpocket, to serve as Hideko’s housekeeper and persuade her to marry him. Hideko resides with her Uncle Kouzuki, a Korean who cooperated with the Japanese in order to obtain a gold mine. Kouzuki then sells forgeries to fund his fixation with rare books, accumulating more money and books. Helping Hideko get ready to recite for Kouzuki’s guests is Sook-hee’s primary responsibility. After returning from a reading agitated, Hideko insists that Sook-hee bed next to her. Under the guise of getting Hideko ready for her marriage to the Count, the two wind up having a sexual encounter. Sook-hee initially expresses hesitation about the plan, but when Hideko says she loves someone other than the Count, Sook-hee becomes adamant about the union. Fujiwara admits that his cigarettes were laced with mercury, and the toxic gas in the smoke kills both of them after Kouzuki sees that the cigarettes are emitting blue smoke. Sook-hee and Hideko enjoy their newfound freedom by getting intimate once more on a ferry to Shanghai, China.
