Lucas “Luke” Jackson, a decorated World War II warrior, beheads several parking meters while intoxicated in Florida in the early 1950s. Luke is brutalized by the guardians until he is worn out in preparation for his escape. The respect of his fellow prisoners is ultimately lost when he breaks down and begs for forgiveness. Luke appears to give in to cowardice and start working as an errand boy for the guards, but when a chance arises, he and Dragline hijack a truck and escape once more. The two decide to split after leaving the truck. Luke walks into a church and speaks to God, whom he accuses of ruining his life and preventing him from succeeding.
