About the quiz
As Red struggles to adjust to life on the outside, he thinks of Andy whenever he feels compelled to commit a minor crime or break the rules of his parole in order to avoid going back to prison. Red spends his days off exploring the countryside, partially because he enjoys the freedom and space, but also because he’s seeking the rock.
Red discovers a note addressed to him from Andy’s pseudonym, Peter Stevens, under the mattress. With a fresh sense of optimism, Red decides to quit his job, violate his parole, and head to Mexico in search of Andy.
The jail guards find Andy’s cell empty a few years down the road, and Red has no idea what happened. As the jail guards investigate the facility, Norton tears the pinup picture off the wall, revealing a large hole in the solid concrete. As a result of the hole, sewage drains out of Shawshank onto the marshy areas that surround it. Andy slowly and methodically carved through the wall with a rock hammer and polishing cloths every night for nearly twenty years. It took Andy eight years to get the confidence to try to escape, Red estimates after digging his own hole.
A rock hammer is requested by Andy when he hears that Red can get numerous objects for him. Andy says that rock collection and carving are hobbies of his. He also requests polishing clothes and a Rita Hayworth poster. They join a labor crew that is replacing the roof of the prison’s license plate factory with fresh asphalt. Andreas, who was listening to the guards’ complaints about the taxes he’ll have to pay on an inheritance, provides suggestions that will assist Hadley to reduce his tax burden, which Byron accepts.
