What is a Shadow Fold, and how does it work?
There is a showdown between Alina and the Darkling. When the Darkling defeats the stag, he fashions a collar out of its antlers that fits snugly around Alina’s neck.
The Darkling commands Alina to illuminate a route through the darkness as they prepare to cross the Fold. Moments earlier, Ravka’s people were watching the Darkling’s approach with hope for the future. Now, Volcra has descended upon them.
According to the Darkling, any who oppose him will be destroyed. Mal is ordered to leave the vessel by the Darkling, who intends to leave him to die in the Fold. Because Alina is powerless to free Mal from the Darkling’s grip, she cannot save her. Her forgiving nature becomes a strength when she experiences a vision of the stag, giving Alina greater control over the amplifier than she had before. She is able to override the Darkling’s order as a result of this enlightenment. In an attempt to help them escape, she dives overboard and summons light to assist them. They are encircled by darkness in the Fold, where she leaves them to perish.
