Forest Whitaker. Ebola. “Precious.” Arnold Schwarzenegger. “Diff’rent Strokes.” Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. [Music group] “Planet of the Apes.” (film title) Kim Kardashian. The running time of “Meet the Blacks,” which is only 90 minutes long, feels much longer than its actual length because it makes numerous references to a wide variety of celebrities and pop-culture phenomena, some of which are completely unrelated to one another. Even when measured against the norms of raunchy, comedic spoofs, the film that Deon Taylor directed and co-wrote feels especially disjointed. It’s almost as if he and his co-writer Nicole DeMasi got together in a room and brainstormed a long list of movies, TV shows, and famous people. After that, they brought the list to the set and asked the actors to come up with improvised bits in which they drop the references here and there.

Additionally, there was possibly going to be some good, pertinent intent: “Our lead actress looks a lot like Sofia Vergara—just let’s mention the name Sofia Vergara; that’ll get a good laugh out of everyone! We were able to convince Mike Tyson to make a cameo appearance, and he has agreed to play a psychotic party clown while also donning a goofy wig. But in spite of that, let’s try telling a joke that will make your ears bleed. Simply due to the fact that it is Mike Tyson, of course.”

It is entirely possible that things unfolded in this manner. Given that “Meet the Blacks” is itself so shaggy and shambling — and not in a way that is endearingly lived-in in the manner of a Richard Linklater film — you may find that your mind wanders toward such theories while watching the film. Just in a disorganized and incoherent manner.

Editor’s Picks

On the most fundamental level, “Meet the Blacks” is a parody of the 2013 thriller “The Purge.” “The Purge” is about a near-future America that is calm and free of crime because on one night a year, everyone is allowed to go on a killing, stealing rampage of catharsis. “Meet the Blacks” is a spoof of “The Purge.” On the other hand, it takes a film that was already a satire of the problems that plague society and gives it a racist twist, ostensibly for comedic effect. However, “Meet the Blacks” does not have much to say, and what it does say is not said in a particularly biting manner.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Meet The Blacks quiz.

Mike Epps plays the role of Carl Black, a man who uproots his family from a dangerous neighborhood in Chicago and relocates them to a posh neighborhood in Beverly Hills. (The name of the gated community is Blanco Cielo, which literally translates to “White Sky.”) Even the black security guard who works at the front gate doesn’t think Carl should be allowed in there; he doesn’t believe he belongs there. “I’m the new person who lives here who starts with an n-word!” Carl continues to demand indignantly. Jim and Mary Smith, the super WASPs who live next door, are also among the people who are suspicious of the presence of his family. The overzealous guy who runs the neighborhood watch is an uncomfortable thing to joke about. In what turns out to be an endless loop of a joke that isn’t all that funny, the cheery Mary says to the person whose name is Black, “It’s a little ironic that your name is Black.”

But as it turns out, Carl is able to afford to live in a faux French Normandy McMansion because he stole a bunch of cash and weed from a drug dealer named Key Flo. This is in addition to the fact that Carl owns and operates a wiring business (Charlie Murphy). Then he made a mad dash across the country with his family, which consisted of his stereotypically sexy Latina wife, Lorena (Zulay Henao), his sassy teenage daughter, Allie (Bresha Webb), his quirky son, Carl Jr. (Alex Henderson), and his creepy former felon cousin, Cronut (Lil Duval). (As a side note, throughout the entire story, everyone refers to Carl Jr. as Carl’s Jr., after the popular chain of quick-service restaurants, which isn’t exactly hilarious the first time.)

The Blacks’ white and racist neighbors take advantage of the opportunity presented by the annual purge (which George Lopez kicks off on live television as a character named President El Bama) to either kill the Blacks or coerce them into leaving the neighborhood.

If this is going to be your premise, which is white people killing black people out of a sense of snobbery and intolerance, then your sense of humor had better be pretty witty and sophisticated. Instead, “Meet the Blacks” provides us with fart jokes and stale references to popular culture, such as “Whatchu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?”

It is also sloppily made from a basic production standpoint, with poor lighting and confusing editing, giving off the uncomfortable vibe of awkward improv, and spotty sound that renders several lines incomprehensible. (Although, to be fair, that might not be such a terrible thing.) At the same time, “Meet the Blacks” takes a few brief detours that are so out of the ordinary, they’re almost interesting to think about. (The appearance by Tyson is one of those things.) You can’t look away because the movie as a whole is such an inept train wreck; you have to see how much worse it can get to believe it’s not going to get any better.

About the quiz

However, every once in a while, it gives the impression that it is attempting, however obliquely, to make a point about racial tensions and prejudices. During the purge, when a group of white neighbors stands outside the front door of the Blacks’ home carrying weapons and wearing masks, the leader of the white neighbors launches into a vicious rant about how unwelcome they are. However, when he uses the n-word in the middle of it, everyone agrees that he has crossed the line, including the individual who originally used the racial slur.

The majority of the time, however, “Meet the Blacks” is far too disorganized to be so self-aware.
