The animated film “Ratchet & Clank,” which is based on the video game franchise of the same name, makes a concerted effort to ridicule and make jokes about the common and generic aspects of its story and its characters. It is filled with establishing subtitles, naming some alien planet and then subtitling the subtitle with, for example, a countdown to the dastardly villain’s inevitable speech that will lay out the specifics for his evil plan.
Naturally, there will be a training montage for us to enjoy, but before it starts, a sub-subtitle will let us know that one is coming up next. During that particular scene, the improbable hero is given the opportunity to put all of his nifty new weapons through their paces. The leader of the team eventually runs out of cool-sounding names for all of the cool weaponry, and as a result, he is forced to refer to one of them, which fires a sawblade, as something along the lines of the “killer buzzing thingy.”
The way the movie approaches its subject matter is admirable. It is actively trying to have fun with material that ought to be fun, and it is also actively making fun of the pieces that are worthy of being mocked because it is trying to have fun with that material. Its approach to all of this is as naive as one can expect from a movie that features the annihilation of multiple planets, and it succeeds in doing so.
Because the effort is frequently obvious, a good number of the jokes are, on the whole, funnier in theory than they are in practice. This is especially true of the practical jokes. That is one of the problems. The second major issue is that there is a limit to how far the humor can be taken. At some point, it becomes necessary for the movie to rely on the aspects that it had previously made light of.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Ratchet And Clank quiz.
Our improbable hero is a Lombax named Ratchet, who is voiced by James Arnold Taylor. Ratchet is one of the few remaining members of his species, which resembles cats in most respects. In the middle of a barren valley on the planet Veldin, he makes his living as a mechanic. The movie has an impressive level of detail in its creation of a series of different worlds, ranging from the desolate headquarters of the villain, which is located on a mountainous planet, to a bustling metropolis that serves as the backdrop for the first action sequence in the movie. The movie’s bold color palette is striking, and it possesses an admirable level of detail in doing so.
Ratchet’s lifelong ambition is to join the Galactic Rangers, an elite group of four warriors who are led by the egotistical and bumbling Captain Qwark (the voice of Jim Ward) and who protect the galaxy from evil. Ratchet’s dream is to one day become a member of the Galactic Rangers. Ratchet’s boss and adoptive father Grim, a purple blob creature with dangling ears and tusks, tells the Lombax that he needs to lower his expectations for what he can get out of life after a disastrous joyride in a souped-up flying car. Grim is voiced by John Goodman.

The main antagonist of the story is a business magnate named Drek, whose voice is provided by Paul Giamatti. Drek has a pear-shaped head and a flattop haircut, and he travels around in a hovering cart. His strategy calls for the destruction of a number of planets, after which he will salvage the most desirable parts of the wreckage and piece them together to create the utopia of his dreams. While this is going on, he has to be concerned about the fact that his henchmen are paying more attention to their mobile phones than they are to the orders he gives them.

Victor Von Ion, whose voice is provided by Sylvester Stallone, is Drek’s right-hand robot. He yearns to engage in actual combat, and Dr. Nefarious, whose voice is provided by Armin Shimerman, is Drek’s mad-scientist partner-in-crime. Dr. Nefarious considers himself more “vengeful” than “mad.” Ratchet’s eventual, pint-sized sidekick Clank (voiced by David Kaye) is a defective model in Drek’s army of robots. Clank first appears in Ratchet and Clank 2. The adorable little guy who has a matter-of-fact way with words and a statistical probability of failing to succeed manages to get away from the assembly line. Clank is forced to make an emergency landing on Veldin, and it is there that Ratchet finds out about Drek’s nefarious plot. After hearing about it, Ratchet becomes determined to foil Drek’s schemes and, in the process, hopes to join the Galactic Rangers.
The screenplay that was written by T.J. Fixman (a regular writer for the game’s series of sequels), Gerry Swallow, and director Kevin Munroe (Jericca Cleland served as the movie’s co-director) features a consistent sense of competing goals. It keeps its sense of humor pretty much the same throughout, which is especially noticeable when Ratchet becomes an overnight celebrity, removing the insecure Qwark from the spotlight where he usually basks in it, and when he starts his Ranger training. When this part of the story is over, however, the narrative more or less falls into the trap of following a format that has already been established. There are fights on land, dogfights among the stars, betrayals, and all the other elements that are typical of space operas.
About the quiz
The comedy takes a back seat to the serious business of addressing the fundamental aspects of story and character that the film makes a concerted effort to undermine. Highlights of the characters include Clank, who is a reliable sidekick, Drek, who is a quirky scoundrel, and Qwark, who is a hero in his own mind despite being completely unaware of it. The remaining members of the Galactic Rangers, whose voices were provided by Rosario Dawson, Bella Thorne, and Dean Redman, come across as afterthoughts that are in search of personalities that go beyond the soldiers’ unquenchable need to shoot something. It is possible that Ratchet’s plasma-beam grappling hook is the trait that brings him the most notoriety as a hero.

The fact that “Ratchet & Clank” makes an effort to poke fun at the tropes and expectations of the genre in which it is set is one of the game’s many redeeming qualities. It’s a shame, then, that by the end of it all, the movie ends up being so predictable.
