It’s possible that “The Other Side of the Door” is, somewhere, deep down—really, really deep down—trying to make a point about the exceptional nature of the United States. It’s possible that it’s trying to send a message about moving to a different country only to find yourself living in a remote idyll, far from the squalor and the teeming masses, blissfully oblivious to the power of centuries-old native beliefs and traditions. It’s possible that they’re trying to make a point with this.

If this is the case, it is extremely difficult to make out what is being said over the distracting screeches and cheesy jump scares.

Editor’s Picks

“The Other Side of the Door,” a film that takes place in Mumbai and is essentially an overly familiar ghost story, is cloaked in pseudo-Hindu mumbo jumbo throughout its entirety. It takes many of the concepts and images, sights and sounds you’ve seen and heard in superior horror movies, cobbles them together, packages them up, and sends them off to India. Johannes Roberts, who also helped write the script, is the director of the movie and one of its co-writers. Every once in a while, he delivers a genuine shock or presents the local scenery in an especially beautiful establishing shot. Aside from that, his movie is mostly boring, full of predictable moments, and even has an exploitative undertone.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Other Side Of The Door quiz.

Michael (Jeremy Sisto) and Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies), who are already married and expecting their first child, are walking along a beach in India (where Michael frequently travels for his work as an antiques dealer), reveling in the news that they are about to become parents for the first time. However, everything is about to take an unexpected turn for the worse. They suddenly come to the conclusion that they want to start a family there, so they move there permanently and make it their home. Because of their ability to.

Now fast forward another six years. Maria experiences recurring bad dreams on a regular basis. She and Michael appear to be living the good life in a vibrant and comfortable home with their adorable daughter, Lucy (Sofia Rosinsky), their ever-helpful live-in housekeeper, Piki (Suchitra Pillai-Malik), and their friendly golden retriever, Winston. Photos and videos taken at home make it abundantly clear that Maria and Michael previously welcomed Oliver into the world (Logan Creran). An extensive flashback describes the gruesome manner in which he passed away, which was as a result of being trapped in his seat during a car accident, during which his mother and sister managed to escape unharmed.

As the water level inside the vehicle continues to rise, we are able to see Oliver’s panic as well as his mother’s fear. We are witnesses to him frantically gasping for air as he begs her not to abandon him and hear his cries and pleas for her not to abandon him. We see Maria sobbing uncontrollably while she clings to the young girl that she was able to rescue. To use an awful cliché from the world of television news, it is every parent’s worst nightmare. This ought to be stuff that makes one sick to their stomach, particularly for this critic in particular, who is the mother of a boy approximately the same age as Oliver with similar blonde and fair features. However, Roberts handles everything in such a clanging and heavy-handed manner that it feels more like an assault than anything else. Then, later on, it feels like a shameless attempt to wring facile fright from legitimate devastation as Maria struggles to work through her grief.

About the quiz

It just so happened that Piki also had a child, a daughter, pass away in a tragic accident involving water. In addition to that, she offers Maria some words of wisdom in the form of an old ceremony. She describes an abandoned temple that is located in the remote village where she lives. At that location, you can disperse the ashes of the deceased on the front steps, then go inside, wait until nightfall, and listen by the door. The individual with whom you would like to have a final conversation will show up on the other side. You will be able to communicate with one another, say your final good-byes, and move on with your lives. But the door is locked from the inside. Again, you will not be permitted to open the door.

So can you guess what it is that Maria does? She goes through all of these elaborate steps (beginning with digging up the buried corpse of her child and cremating it), listens at the door, hears Oliver’s voice, and tells him that she loves him, that she misses him, and that she is sorry that she was unable to save him. After that, she pushes open the door.

In the course of the process, she also opens the gateway between the living and the dead, or something along those lines. In the meantime, Roberts pulls out an extensive toolbox full of tried-and-true techniques used in haunted house movies. Strange occurrences start to take place not long after Maria has returned to her family at home. Strange things happen when toys are moved around. Oliver’s name is spelled out in the floor by falling wooden blocks in the correct order. A light turns on and off all by itself. A book is dislodged from its perch on a shelf. “Heart and Soul” is being played on the piano in the middle of the night. And the dog, the poor, sweet dog, tries to warn everyone about what is going on with his sharp bark, but it is in vain.

Even though her character is making increasingly stupid choices in the name of parental love, Callies manages to give off the impression that she is approachable and makes an effort to add more pathos and humanity to her performance than was originally written into the script. Sisto is given very little to do beyond scurrying in late and catching the remaining half of the story over and over again. And Pillai-Malik, the only Indian actor with a speaking role, is cast in the thankless role of having to be right while still having to suffer for it. He is the only Indian actor in the film.
