The biopic “Straight Outta Compton” has goals that are unexpected and appear to be in conflict with one another. Its purpose is not only to make you angry but also to break your heart in the process. Its moments of tenderness and quietness are just as engaging as the well-executed action sequences that it features throughout the film. It is unrepentant in both its anger and its lack of morality, leaving it up to the audience to evaluate the situation for themselves and determine the level of their own outrage. People who are interested in hearing the story of an influential rap group will be pleased to know that the filmmakers have created a movie that is both politically charged and a crowd-pleaser in the “talk back to the screen” vein. It is a reminder that the biopic genre held the patent on the cinematic origin story long before the Marvel Universe; it plays like a Marvel superhero movie had Marvel been run by Suge Knight. “Straight Outta Compton” is a reminder that the biopic genre held the patent on the cinematic origin story.

The original members of N.W.A.—MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), DJ Yella (Neil Brown, Jr.), and Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson, Jr, doing a great job playing his Dad)—serve as this movie’s Guardians of the West Coast Rap Galaxy. We follow them from the time when they were just starting out all the way up to when they were at the pinnacle of their fame, pausing along the way to hit the expected milestones and musical cues. While “Straight Outta Compton” makes use of some of the well-known biopic beats, it takes listeners by surprise by layering new lyrics on top of those beats. The narrative as a whole as well as the occasional tonal shifts all contribute to the overall increased complexity of this piece. At other times, the movie takes on the appearance of a rap video, with scantily clad women and flashy jewelry filling the screen. At other times, it conjures up a near-meta recreation of 1990s dramas such as “Boyz N the Hood,” which was filmed in the same city as one of the characters in this film.

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the release of the group’s self-titled debut album, which coincides with the release of “Straight Outta Compton.” The album garnered millions of fans and robust record sales, opening the floodgates for West Coast rappers as it ushered in the era of gangsta rap and ushering in the era of gangsta rap. The profane and violent lyrics on the record quickly courted controversy, earning the record one of Tipper Gore’s “parental advisory” labels and a threatening letter from the F.B.I. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was involved because of the controversial second track on “Straight Outta Compton,” which was titled “Fuck Da Police” and was a rather biting commentary on the interaction between law enforcement and the minority community.

Screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff fearlessly present the environment that fostered that song, invoking the old adage that rap music is “CNN for brown people.” They do this by using the phrase “CNN for brown people.” There will be many thinkpieces written about the depiction of the LAPD in “Straight Outta Compton,” and the film makes no apologies for drawing a correlation between events that took place almost 30 years ago and the events that we hear about today on an almost daily basis. The scene in the first half of “Straight Outta Compton” that depicts the angry reaction of the group’s manager Jerry Heller (played by Paul Giamatti) to the treatment of his talent by the police is the most subversive of the bunch. Heller lashes the officers with a fury that his charges would not dare to emulate, and the movie makes the audience consider that Heller might unintentionally get N.W.A. imprisoned or shot because of his actions.

If there’s one thing that movies about musicians have taught us in 2015, it’s that you shouldn’t hire Paul Giamatti to be your manager. Giamatti does not have his client’s best interests in mind, just as he did in the movie “Love and Mercy.” In both movies, he exaggerates the intensity of the angry moments, but in “Straight Outta Compton,” the intensity of those moments is moderated by scenes in which Heller and Eazy-E interact in a friendly manner. Straight Outta Compton’s emotional arc, which runs parallel to its scenes of music, raunchiness, and danger, is driven by Eazy’s story, which serves as the film’s emotional core. It is Eazy-E who comes up with the idea (and the start-up cash) to try out Dre’s dream of making music, and it is Eazy-E who looks for a business mentor to help him keep an eye on his friends’ interests. Eazy-E is the one who comes up with the idea (and the start-up cash) to try out Dre’s dream of making music. And unfortunately, it is Eazy-E who gets sick right before the band tries to make a comeback from their hiatus.

Mitchell, a newcomer to acting, is given a challenging role as Eazy-E in this movie, and he responds by giving an outstanding performance, which is the best one in the movie. The manner in which he responds to the double whammy of Heller’s betrayal and the news about his health is wrenching to the stomach. Even when they are at each other’s throats, it is never lost sight of how much these characters care for one another. He and the other N.W.A. actors have tremendous chemistry together. Their moments of companionship are never cheesy or obvious in any way. The group’s response to the dis record that Ice Cube made after he left the group is the scene that stands out as the most compelling in the movie. Their annoyance gives way to the contentment that comes from the realization that they have just listened to a fantastic rap record. “I kinda liked it,” says DJ Yella.

About the quiz

Even the supporting roles in this film are played with a high level of professionalism. “Short Term 12” star Keith Stanfield gives a fantastic performance as Snoop Dogg. As Eazy-wife, E’s Tomica, Carra Patterson gives a strong performance despite the role being underwritten. And R. Marcos Taylor is also worth mentioning; he is frightening in the role of Suge Knight, which is a role that I would be too terrified to play. Other well-known rappers from the West Coast make appearances in the film, as do well-known events in the plot, and the movie treats both of these elements with the reverence that it is aware the audience craves. It is completely ridiculous how it manages to get Ice Cube to say his famous kiss-off line from “Friday.” This is just one example of how the film shamelessly shoehorns fan-pleasing elements into the film in an attempt to appease the audience.

Straight Outta Compton is an epic-sized take on approaching the American Dream from an awry angle that draws straight outta Compton and straight into capitalism. The film was directed by F. Gary Gray. Gray keeps the 147-minute running time of the film moving along at a brisk pace, just as he did with his classic caper film “Set It Off.” Matthew Libatique, an experienced cinematographer, lends a hand by ensuring that the action is visually interesting. Even though there are a few clumsy moments here and there (for example, we could have done without some of the rather sketchy scenes of groupie gratification), this is, all things considered, an excellent piece of work. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you feel inspired. I admired its willingness to be as unrelenting as the album that N.W.A. released, and I had a great time trying to mouth the words to every song that was featured on the soundtrack.

Even if you aren’t a huge fan of NWA, there is still a lot here that you’ll find to like. If you are a fan of the series, I have no doubt that you will enjoy this movie just as much as I did.
