The Origins of the Term “Snowflakes”

Although some people think the phrase “Snowflake” originates from the Fight Club novel, it is actually far older. According to historical evidence, Americans started using these terms to describe some persons in the 1860s, both during and after the Civil War. It spoke of the proponents of slavery, who were mostly white men.

Then, during the Black Power struggle in the 1970s, people began to use the phrase as a racist epithet. The term “Snowflake” was then used to describe black people who appeared overly white to outsiders.

The present usage, however, began in 2015 as a result of political rallies. Right-wing millennials were dubbed “snowflakes” by the left, implying that they are extremely delicate. The left-wing responded by doing the same and calling Donald Trump and his fans “snowflakes” since they appeared to be irate and outraged by everything.

In 2021, the term is used to refer to someone who cannot stand conflicting viewpoints or is quickly offended.

What Is the Snowflake Test Used For?

Why do some people question, “Am I a snowflake? ” since the word has a negative connotation? Alternatively, why would someone want to show that by taking a personality test? Despite the negative implications, there are four basic reasons why people answer these questions. For additional information, continue reading.

Remove Culture

The call-out culture exists. Due of this phenomena, many millennials and Gen-Zers experience loneliness and isolation. Labeling people as Snowflakes has recently been one way to reject them. To determine whether they are deserving of such labels or not, some people take online assessments like the one on this page.

Career Interviews

For his job interviews in 2017, the CEO of Silent Partner Marketing developed a hypersensitivity test on his own. His intention was to screen out those who were too fragile or overly sensitive. When Kyle Reyes’ Snowflake Test became viral, many other employers decided to use it as well. And because of this, people continue to search online for these tests to take before submitting a job application.

Self Evaluation

Some Gen-Zers, Millennials, and even Zillennials use the Snowflake exam only as a self-evaluation tool. They want to be sure that they are not viewed negatively by society as easily vulnerable and weak.

Political Arguments

The phrase has been discussed in politics since 2015. As a result, individuals could take the free Snowflake exam solely to support their beliefs. To determine whether the left or right would describe you as soft or prickly, our questionaire includes both left- and right-wing ideologies.

Why Do Some People Oppose Snowflake Tests?

Numerous anti-discrimination and social justice movements, like Black Lives Matter, were effective in the 2010s. However, some contend that seemingly neutral phrases like “snowflake” are actually fueling prejudice and intolerance towards specific social groupings. And for this reason, some campaigners and influential people have criticized and rejected the online tests.

For example, right-wing supporters have criticized Gen-Zers for being more forthcoming about their feelings and mental health difficulties. The most recent victim of such attacks was American artistic gymnast Simone Biles. (Due to her fragile mental state, she declined to take part in the Olympics finals. For it, some people dubbed her privileged, weak, and self-centered.

If you haven’t already, stop using the term.

Yes, this discriminating term is used in the Snowflake Test. However, that does not imply that we approve of it. Whatever your motivations, calling someone a term like that hurts them. Some people even assert that the phrase has a more sinister and repulsive meaning. Folklore holds that the Nazis created the phrase to describe the ashes of the victims that were burned in concentration camps.

Note that no academic institution has endorsed such assertions regarding the word’s origin.

Own Your Originality

You undoubtedly already know that every snowflake is unique, much like a person’s fingerprint. So, if someone calls you that, you can be sure that their irritation with your exclusivity is real.

Here are a few methods to respond to prejudiced individuals who are attempting to offend you. The following strategies were provided by Julie Sprankles in a post she wrote for Bustle in 2017.

  • Thank you!

“A simple thank you might deter the individual who planned to use this term as an offense against you,” Julie advises.

  • disregard the individual

It is harmful to refer to others in racist words. Therefore, for the sake of your mental health, you can always cut the other person off and refuse to engage in further dialogue.

  • Remind Them of Their Disrespectfulness

Snowflake has been used to criticize abolitionists and even certain members of the black community. Therefore, it is advisable to inform the speaker that their choice of words is inappropriate. Additionally, it demonstrates their disregard for important historical and social movements.
