Close Encounters of the Third Kind is Steven Spielberg’s family-sized UFO drama. When Jaws was released, it was Columbia Pictures’ greatest grossing film. It also showed that Jaws director Steven Spielberg was no flash in the pan. ‘Close Encounters’ was fanciful, mystifying, and bordering on hysterical at points. The film became my ultimate favorite for a few years.

In the words of Pauline Kael, it was “a kid’s film in the nicest sense” At eight or nine years of age, it looked incredibly deep and meaningful. It was as much a guide to maturity as it was to the cosmos above us. Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) undergoes a Damascene conversion on the backroads of Indiana and returns home a zealous fanatic to scare his kids at the dinner table. Through the sobs, he tells them, “I imagine you’ve noticed something a little unusual about Dad.” However, everything is OK. I’m still a father.

Editor’s Picks

Spielberg actually wanted Steve McQueen to take the role, which is a bit unusual. A rugged all-American turned cosmic pioneer, as opposed to an everyman in mortifying meltdown, would have made for a very different film. Dreyfuss was the obvious better choice. As a result, Neary appears grey-faced, unkempt, and older than his years.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind quiz

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a superb movie, with every chance of matching the box-office success of Star Wars, if not surpassing it. Inevitable as it may be, the parallel is not offensive. Once again, in this Julia and Michael Phillips production, the emphasis is on the special effects, and they are nothing short of fantastic. A spectacular light spectacle that dazzles the senses.

Some of these early encounters are as scary and mysterious as The Exorcist. But this isn’t a horror show. Also, Steven Spielberg’s script is based on the notion that UFOs exist, and Spielberg’s direction makes them palpable enough to convince even the most ardent skeptic. Spielberg, unlike George Lucas, is not working with his tongue in his cheek, as John Williams’ magnificent, the enormous score makes clear. Then, there’s no way this could be a joke on the square.

About the quiz

A World War II plane squadron is found in the desert, an unidentified object appears on the Indianapolis traffic control tower’s screen, and a child is roused from his bed by an unearthly bright light.

“As Neary’s increasingly odd behavior forces the rest of his family to flee him, Neary is shocked to see himself in the feature that has been running on TV news.” And he’s not the only one. Guiler meets him en way. Also, in other parts of the earth, alien activity is on the rise. Lacombe (based on Vallée, played by Truffaut) analyzes strange happenings alongside other UN experts. Eventually, the obsessives and the specialists meet at Devils Tower in Wyoming, where they discuss their differences and similarities.

Roy and Jillian are able to make it to the place just as UFOs arrive in the sky. All of the missing World War II pilots and Cotopaxi sailors, as well as over a dozen additional abductees (from long-missing adults to youngsters, and even a few animals), are freed. A relieved Jillian is happy to see Barry back.

Upon exiting the mothership, the extraterrestrials hand-pick Roy to accompany them on their journey. Un alien stops for a few seconds with the humans as Roy enters the mothership. For the five-note extraterrestrial sentence, Lacombe uses Curwen hand signals. The extraterrestrial responds with the same movements, smiles, and returns to its ship, which ascends into space, before vanishing into thin air.
