Close Encounters of the Third Kind is Steven Spielberg’s family-sized UFO drama. When Jaws was released, it was Columbia Pictures’ greatest grossing film. It also showed that Jaws director Steven Spielberg was no flash in the pan. ‘Close Encounters’ was fanciful, mystifying, and bordering on hysterical at points. The film became my ultimate favorite for a few years.
In the words of Pauline Kael, it was “a kid’s film in the nicest sense” At eight or nine years of age, it looked incredibly deep and meaningful. It was as much a guide to maturity as it was to the cosmos above us. Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) undergoes a Damascene conversion on the backroads of Indiana and returns home a zealous fanatic to scare his kids at the dinner table. Through the sobs, he tells them, “I imagine you’ve noticed something a little unusual about Dad.” However, everything is OK. I’m still a father.
Spielberg actually wanted Steve McQueen to take the role, which is a bit unusual. A rugged all-American turned cosmic pioneer, as opposed to an everyman in mortifying meltdown, would have made for a very different film. Dreyfuss was the obvious better choice. As a result, Neary appears grey-faced, unkempt, and older than his years.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a superb movie, with every chance of matching the box-office success of Star Wars, if not surpassing it. Inevitable as it may be, the parallel is not offensive. Once again, in this Julia and Michael Phillips production, the emphasis is on the special effects, and they are nothing short of fantastic. A spectacular light spectacle that dazzles the senses.

Upon exiting the mothership, the extraterrestrials hand-pick Roy to accompany them on their journey. Un alien stops for a few seconds with the humans as Roy enters the mothership. The extraterrestrial responds with the same movements, smiles, and returns to its ship, which ascends into space, before vanishing into thin air.
