Ash Williams, his fiancée Linda, sister Cheryl, their buddy Scott, and Scott’s girlfriend Shelly are five students from Michigan State University who are on vacation in a remote cabin in rural Tennessee. The gang approaches the cabin and finds the porch swing swinging on its own, then stopping when Scott clutches the doorknob. Cheryl is sketching a clock when it pauses, and a faint demonic voice tells her to “join us” as it continues. Her hand sketches a picture of a book with a demonic face on its cover while becoming possessed, turning pallid. She is shaken, but she doesn’t bring up the incident.

Shelly, Linda, and Cheryl are upstairs as the cellar trapdoor flies open during supper, leaving Ash and Scott to look about the cellar. They discover the Naturom Demonto, a Sumerian translation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and steal the tape recorder belonging to archaeologist Raymond Knowby upstairs. A recording of incantations that revive a demonic being is played by Scott. A tree branch shatters one of the cabin’s windows as Cheryl pleads for Scott to switch off the audio recorder. Cheryl is attacked and raped by demonically possessed trees when she ventures into the woods later that evening to investigate unusual noises. Ash decides to take her back into town after she flees and returns to the cabin battered and distraught only to find that the bridge leading to the cabin has been demolished. When Cheryl realizes they are now imprisoned and the demonic entity won’t let them leave, she panics. Ash hears more of the recording when she is back at the cabin and discovers that the only way to get rid of the entity is to dismember a host who has been possessed. Cheryl properly calls out the cards without looking at them as Linda and Shelly play spades, gives in to the creature, and levitates. She wants to know why they disrupted her slumber and threatens to kill everyone in a hoarse, demonic voice. She tosses Ash onto a bookcase while stabbing Linda in the ankle with a pencil. Ash is startled to discover Linda to be possessed when he checks on her. He is attacked by her, but he uses the Sumerian dagger to stab her. He decides to bury her instead of dismembering her. He is forced to use a shovel to decapitate her after she awakens and fights him. As it tries to rape him, her headless body bleeds all over his face. About the quiz

Ash returns home to find Cheryl out of the cellar. Cheryl runs away from Ash and tries to choke him. After eluding her hold, Ash shoots Cheryl in the jaw. Scott comes back to life and turns into a Deadite as Ash is closing the door. While attacking Ash, Scott unintentionally moves the Naturom Demonto toward the fireplace.
