I’ve never encountered a real-life person who resembles Forrest Gump before, and I’ve never seen a movie quite like “Forrest Gump.” Let me try to describe him even though it runs the danger of making the movie seem less original than it actually is. I suppose it’s a comedy. Or perhaps a thriller. maybe a hallucination.

Instead of following the rules of contemporary movies, Eric Roth’s screenplay has the complexity of contemporary literature. Its protagonist, portrayed by Tom Hanks, is a completely decent man with a 75 IQ who manages to get involved in every significant event in American history between the 1950s and the 1980s. And using nothing but kindness and honesty as armor, he manages to endure them all.

And yet, this is not a touching tale about a guy with mental retardation. Forrest Gump would find that cubbyhole to be far too tiny and constricting. As seen through the eyes of a guy who lacks cynicism and accepts things for what they are, the film is more of a meditation on our times. If you pay close attention to him, you will see why it is said that some individuals are “too clever by half.” Forrest has just the right amount of intelligence.

Editor’s Picks

The only performer who could have filled the part may have been Tom Hanks.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Forrest Gump quiz.

After seeing how Hanks transforms Gump into a person so stately and direct, I can’t imagine anyone else playing the character. The performance masterfully strikes a balance between comedy and melancholy in a narrative full of hearty laughter and quiet truths.

Forrest is the son of an Alabama boardinghouse owner (Sally Field) who never criticizes his intellect but forces him to wear braces to improve his posture. Forrest’s mother tells him, “Stupid is as stupid does,” when he is called “stupid,” and it comes out that Forrest is incapable of acting in a manner that is anything less than profound. Additionally, it comes out he can run like the wind once the braces are finally removed from his legs.

In a life story that ultimately turns into a running joke about his good fortune, that is how he receives a college football scholarship. Gump, the football hero, goes on to receive the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, become the Ping-Pong champion, captain of a shrimp boat, millionaire stockholder (after receiving shares in a brand-new “fruit company” called Apple Computer), and run across America before retracing his steps.

With an IQ of only 75, one could say that Forrest does not fully comprehend everything that occurs to him. Not so. The movie implies that he knows everything he needs to know and that the remainder is extraneous information. Even though Jenny, the girl he falls in love with in elementary school and never lets go of, informs him, “Forrest, you don’t know what love is,” he comprehends every essential aspect of love. By then, she is a prostitute.

The film brilliantly guides Forrest through recent American history. Robert Zemeckis, the film’s director, is well-versed in the magic that special effects can work; among his accomplishments are “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and the “Back to the Future” films. In this instance, he uses computerized visual trickery to put Forrest Gump in real-life historical contexts with real people.

About the quiz

Forrest visits the White House three times, stands next to the schoolhouse door with George Wallace, teaches Elvis how to swivel his hips, appears with John Lennon on the Dick Cavett Show, and addresses a Vietnam-era peace rally on the Mall in Washington in a scene so realistic that you’ll want to rub your eyes. Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise), a Ron Kovic-style character who successfully loses his legs, is another character created using special effects.

Zemeckis is able to produce some hilarious moments by using carefully chosen TV footage and dubbing voices, such as when LBJ checks the wound in what Forrest refers to as “my butt-ox.” The movie’s biggest laugh occurs after Nixon asks Forrest where he is lodging in Washington and suggests the Watergate. (That’s just the setup; the guffaw isn’t there.) Forrest’s life turns into a journey of conventional America while Jenny (Robin Wright) embarks on a parallel tour of the counterculture. Of course, she moves to California, drops out, tunes in, and switches on. She enjoys military protests and love-ins, psychedelics and flower power, as well as drugs and needles. In the end, it becomes evident that Forrest and Jenny have covered every significant event in our recent cultural past, and the compromise they reach is comparable to a utopian vision of rapprochement for our society. What a wonderful film.
