This new “Jumanji” film, like its predecessor, combines fantastical action and adventure with comedy, a hint of romance, and real-life lessons about courage, friendship, and empathy—all while incorporating some subtle race and gender fluidity.

The four high school kids who were pulled inside an old-fashioned video game console and transformed into archetypal adventure heroes (some more heroic than others) were so glad to go home at the end of the last film that they shattered the game. But the movie was a financial success, and the game is back in action, with the now-college-aged kids joined by a couple of old-school characters.

Editor’s Picks

Spencer (Alex Wolff) is currently a first-year student at New York University. Maintaining his long-distance romance with Martha (Morgan Turner) has been difficult, and as he travels home for the holidays, he is unsure whether they are still together. Eddie (Danny DeVito), Spencer’s grandfather, is recovering from hip surgery and is in the house with his stairlift, hospital bed, and CPAP machine. Milo (Danny Glover), Eddie’s estranged former business partner, comes over to try to mend their friendship, but Eddie is uninterested.

Spencer misses the self-assurance he felt as Dr. Smolder Bravestone in the video game (Dwayne Johnson). As a result, he returns to the game, where the life and death difficulties appear more familiar and manageable than in real life. When he fails to return, Martha, Bethany (Madison Iseman), and Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) re-enter the game in an attempt to save him. There is, however, a slight change. The game is up to no good once more, and while Martha is back as dance-fighting expert Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), Eddie is back as Dr. Bravestone. Milo is Kevin Hart’s weapons-carrying Mouse Finbar, while Fridge is Bethany’s prior avatar, obese map-expert Dr. Shelly Oberon (Jack Black). Bethany’s whereabouts are unknown. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Jumanji The Next Level quiz.

Each avatar has three bars on its wrists, one for each life available in the game. As Martha/Ruby tries to explain what’s going on to Eddie and Milo, a couple of those lives are quickly depleted.

This level, like all excellent video games, is more challenging than the last. Bill Brzeski’s production design is gorgeous and thrillingly innovative, while Henry Jackman’s rousing music evokes not only the best in video games but also the most fondly remembered classic adventure films. Following the jungle adventure of the first film, this sequel takes them into the desert and to a castle on a snowy hilltop, complete with breathtaking risky journeys by dune buggy, rope bridge, and zeppelin. Snakes, ostriches, and boobytraps all pose a threat. There’s also a new antagonist, Jurgan the Brutal, a gigantic Hun-like conqueror (Rory McCann). The purpose of this level is to recover a jewel that Jurgan stole from peaceful indigenous farmers.

About the quiz

Bethany and Alex (Colin Hanks), the character they saved in the first film, eventually appear in the game. Alex is reunited with his previous avatar, Seaplane (Nick Jonas), but Bethany is a very different persona, as is Spencer when they finally track him down. I won’t reveal them; instead, I’ll say that the best part of the movie is when Johnson, Gillan, Hart, Black, and a fantastic newcomer, Awkwafina, get to portray a variety of characters. The age, ethnicity, and gender shifts are kept to a minimum throughout the script. There’s some vulgar humor in the style of a playground, but it’s never loud or archly coy.

In the first film, Johnson played Spencer, a comically exaggerated representation of an adolescent learning the power of adulthood. But, as Spencer’s grumpy grandfather’s alter ego, he’s definitely having more fun. He’s far too preoccupied with swiveling hips that have a complete range of motion for the first time in years to notice the odd concept of being stuck inside a video game (he doesn’t seem to know what a video game is). Johnson/Bravestone as Spencer was something to aspire to in the future that still appeared full of limitless possibilities, while Johnson/Bravestone as Eddie is filled with the bucket list delight of someone who only sees loss ahead. As the avatar for the slow-talking Milo, whose avatar’s strength is languages but who retains his discursive approach, Hart is especially excellent at dialing down his typical peppery energy. Both Black and Awkwafina have the opportunity to play multiple human personalities, making each one unique and witty.

The characters can become more honest with themselves and each other thanks to the avatars’ imagination, which includes their allocated strengths and faults. The humor and thrill are expertly handled, so it never gets too terrifying or stupid, and the focus is on friendship rather than romance, as in the first picture. This time, there’s a small tinge of melancholy as well, which adds to the message of camaraderie. And, as with all good video games, there’s a suggestion of a new level at the conclusion for those, like myself, who aren’t quite ready to call it a day.
