Mike Vronsky, Steven Pushkov, and Nick Chevotarevich are three friends who live in a close-knit Russian American[3][a] community in Western Pennsylvania in 1968. They work in a steel factory and go deer hunting with their coworkers Axel and Stan and a bartender friend named John. Mike, Steven, and Nick are getting ready to deploy to the Vietnam War. Angela, who was covertly pregnant by another guy, is Steven’s fiancée. Linda, who will be moving into their home to flee her controlling, alcoholic father, is a close friend of Mike and Nick’s, they reside together, and they both love her. At Steven and Angela’s nuptials, Linda accepts Nick’s unexpected marriage proposal while dancing. Nick begs Mike, who is intoxicated and naked, to make sure he returns from Vietnam as the honeymooners leave in their car. A final deer hunt is conducted by Mike, Nick, and the other guys. In keeping with his beliefs, Mike uses a single shot to effectively dispatch a deer. Mike, who is now a Green Beret, unexpectedly runs into Nick and Steven in a hamlet in Vietnam, but the group is attacked and taken prisoner by the Viet Cong. They are held captive in a bamboo and wire enclosure on a river and made to play Russian roulette with the other inmates while the jailers place bets. Steven fires his round at the sky, exhausted and terrified. He is condemned and left to perish in a different bamboo “pit,” encircled by rats and corpses. Together with Nick, Mike comes up with a strategy to persuade their kidnappers to load the revolver with three bullets rather than just one. While Nick takes a nearby soldier’s rifle and uses it to help murder the surviving guards, Mike fires the revolver at their captors. Steven, who is currently experiencing PTSD, is extricated from the hole by the two.

The three uses a trunk from a fallen tree to float down the river as they make their getaway. Nick, whose leg was shot during the firefight, is saved by an American helicopter when they reach a suspension bridge, but Steven is worn out and collapses back into the river. While Nick is being taken away in the chopper, Mike descends to assist Steven. Mike carries Steven because his legs were fractured in the fall until they come across a group of refugees heading to Saigon. A military facility in the United States provides care for Nick. After being freed, Nick walks around Saigon and hears gunshots, which leads him to a casino and makes him think of the abuse he suffered while being held captive. Julien Grinda, a French investor, convinces him to enter. Nick interrupts a game of Russian roulette because he is upset. He points the revolver at one of the participants, pulls the trigger, and then aims it at himself. In the midst of the chaos, Mike, who is watching, cries out to Nick but Nick and Julien hurry away without hearing him. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Deer Hunter quiz. Mike returns home in 1970 but finds it challenging to fit back into society. He chooses to spend the night alone in a motel rather than attend a welcome-home party that Linda and their acquaintances have planned. The following morning when he sees Linda, he finds out that Nick has left. Mike then goes to see Angela, who is now a mother but has fallen into catatonia as a result of Steven’s return, who has been left helpless. Since Stan, Axel, and John did not service in the military and stayed in the country throughout the conflict, they are unaware of the horrors Mike has endured and continue to treat him as they did before he left. Mike and Linda find solace in one another’s companionship. The following days reveal Mike’s confusion; he finds it difficult to kill a deer while on a hunting excursion and becomes indignant when Stan jokingly threatens Axel with his revolver. When Mike notices Stan acting in this way, he chambers one cartridge into the cylinder and fires an empty chamber at Stan’s head to make him realize the seriousness of his behavior.

Mike makes Steven return to Angela’s house because he thinks Nick is the one mailing the money. After that, Mike goes looking for Nick in Vietnam. In the pandemonium that has now taken over Saigon, just before it falls, Mike comes across Julien and convinces him to take him to the casino. Nick, who has mastered the eerie game, is found by Mike, but he is not recognized by Nick. Mike makes an effort to reason with Nick, but the heroin user Nick is unconcerned.
