Some observatories see a flash of light from Mars’ surface during the astronomical opposition of 1894. There is a brief flash of light on the planet every night. Mars’s cylinder slowly but surely attracts big crowds, which gather near the pit’s edge to see what will happen. When the heavy lid finally falls to the ground, the panicked crowd is silenced. After finding the crash site, word of this strange event spreads quickly. Due to the massive crater that the cylinder has created, there is a large crowd that gathers around the site. In the entrance, the humans expect to see people who look like them crawling out. Instead, when the Martians first appeared, they had a completely distinct appearance from humans. They are large and gray in color, with greasy brown skin on their backs and faces. Their size resembles that of a bear, rather than that of a human being. Martian weapons fire heat beams that set anything on fire. On his way home, the narrator and his wife stop at Leatherhead, where his wife’s cousins live. He realizes he has to return the cart he borrowed from an innkeeper and had promised to return shortly after they arrive. He leaves his wife behind in Leatherhead in order to return the cart to its rightful owner.
His return to the town he escaped with his wife is met with a deluge of dead bodies, including the innkeeper. There is a large metal machine on a tripod with a Martian inside. The next day, the narrator and the artilleryman leave together from his home.
