Some observatories see a flash of light from Mars’ surface during the astronomical opposition of 1894. There is a brief flash of light on the planet every night. A telescope possessed by his friend Ogilvy allows the narrator to see this for himself. It’s improbable that there are any living creatures on Mars, Ogilvy says the narrator. Anomalies are reported slowly by local newspapers, who don’t attribute much significance to them when they do.

Editor’s Picks

Ogilvy’s house in Horsell, England, is rocked by a greenish flame that sweeps over the sky in the early morning hours after several nights of odd Martian flashes. He runs outside, thinking he’s seen a meteor, to find it. Its own impact has left an enormous cylindrical mass in its wake, waiting for him to discover it. Watching, he sees what he believes to be men, half-burned to death, trying to flee from the missile. Woking is Ogilvy’s destination once he emerges from the pit. A wagoner avoids him since he appears and sounds insane. When Ogilvy finally locates Henderson, a writer from Los Angeles.

War Of The Worlds quiz

Mars’s cylinder slowly but surely attracts big crowds, which gather near the pit’s edge to see what will happen. When the heavy lid finally falls to the ground, the panicked crowd is silenced. Undark and a greyish creature with “luminous discs” for eyes and snake-like tentacles appear from the dark cavity. When the narrator spots a second thing emerging from the hole of the cylinder, he runs for protection toward the trees. Upon looking back, he sees the head of a man who had fallen into the pit trying to escape before suddenly sliding backward with a scream in his ear. Beginning with the narrator and curate seeking food in residences, Book 2 is a continuation of Book 1. Eventually, the narrator must knock him out of his mind to keep him quiet. As a result of the disturbance outside, Martians swoop in and grab the curate’s body. The narrator barely escapes them after they consume his blood for nourishment.

Further exploration of the planet’s surface reveals an invasive Martian plant that seems to prefer areas with a great amount of water.

Artilleryman tells him of a plan to live underground and rebuild society, although it doesn’t seem particularly well thought out to him at the time of their meeting. After becoming insane in the streets of London, the narrator approaches a Martian machine with the purpose of killing himself. But he finds that the Martians within are actually dead, having succumbed to sickness brought on by bacteria in Earth’s atmosphere.

About the quiz

When the narrator suffers a nervous breakdown, a loving family tends to him. It is only after his return that he is able to confirm the existence of his wife.

After finding the crash site, word of this strange event spreads quickly. Due to the massive crater that the cylinder has created, there is a large crowd that gathers around the site. In the entrance, the humans expect to see people who look like them crawling out. Instead, when the Martians first appeared, they had a completely distinct appearance from humans. They are large and gray in color, with greasy brown skin on their backs and faces. Their size resembles that of a bear, rather than that of a human being. Large, black eyes and a V-shaped mouth that drips saliva distinguish them. Inhumane and hideous, the narrator thought of them.

Martian weapons fire heat beams that set anything on fire. On his way home, the narrator and his wife stop at Leatherhead, where his wife’s cousins live. He realizes he has to return the cart he borrowed from an innkeeper and had promised to return shortly after they arrive. He leaves his wife behind in Leatherhead in order to return the cart to its rightful owner.

His return to the town he escaped with his wife is met with a deluge of dead bodies, including the innkeeper. There is a large metal machine on a tripod with a Martian inside. The next day, the narrator and the artilleryman leave together from his home.
