The beginning of this season is with Alexa devising a plan so that Katie can enjoy her senior year without stress. At her new job, Jennifer is going to start her first day. It is not a knock-on, it is more an issue of how our society protects its children from the harsh realities, which regrettably many of these children confront each day. The new young comedy is part of Netflix’s recent programming offers ranging from the dark and transgressive “End of the Fucking World,” “On My Block,” to the more realistic “Everything Sucks!” and the anguished. Despite the cancer premise, “Alexa & Katie” is the lightest. Also, all this screamed Disney Channel comedy, from the sweet color scheme and cookies to the striking laughter and the universally stunning cast.
This is a flawless shot of good amusement targeting at this teen/two sets, but can steadily comment on what it means to live with a terrible illness when you are still a child. But “Alexa & Katie” never get into too dreadful an area as a family-friendly TV show. There is no death (yet), no existential crises (as if), and no movements to build your own meth laboratory (alas).
“Cancer” is the Alexa & Katie differentiator. Alexa’s diagnosis is an obstacle to her becoming normal and doing all necessary to define herself at these critical early secondary school times. This is an explanation of why her mother is so attached. It’s an explanation of why her dad doesn’t look at her like he used to. And if you say, ‘Wait, that seems completely symbolic and ‘cancer’ could be only a ‘puberty’ stand-in,’ well there’s at least some of this.
About the quiz
Watching episodes on my laptop prevented me from saying with a 100 percent certitude that the disease of the principal character is basically embodied with an early cap — in HD, visitors are sure if anybody shaved their heads — but this is not the kind of disease that makes anyone less than totally bizarre and photogenic, since audiences probably wouldn’t know what to do with it. This is Disney Channel Cancer. Cancer.
Yet it’s not wholly symbolically addressed or over-rejected. It’s the best thing Alexa has to do for the brief seriousness Alexa and his colleagues take — it’s virtually a half-hour episode of Fox’s short-lived Red Band Society — and for the real sentiments of uncertainty and alone that episode reveals to Katie.
Much more often “cancer” is just the momentum for high school farces and youthful pranks and misfortunes — sneaking out late at night, grumbling about a test failure, having trouble with the principal, etc. Alexa’s illness or concerns about her destroyed immune system are dramatic obstacles worthless time than how to handle an inviting surprise to dance or the embarrassment of a first kiss as part of Romeo & Juliet’s staging.
