We all believe that we know Pocahontas, but the real story is significantly different from the popular one. For many years I had been a professor of American Native History. When they came to the United States and England, I was in a project examining the early relationships between colonists and indigenous people. I assumed I could turn to Pocahontas, John Smith, and John Rolfe for other people’s labor. But I found that most of them were full of hogwash when I tried to examine them. Other historians were [but] people who specialized in other topics and took it for granted that if something was repeated multiple times in the writings of others it had to be true.
