After a long and steamy day, Disney’s opening scenes “The Princess and the Frog” seem like a cold shower. That’s how traditional animation was once! And. – good weight. Good weight! A tale! Characters! An intrigue! In a certain moment and place, it’s set! And it uses lovingly hand-drawn animation (slow me down here), which proceeds at a human rate, rather than speeding with strange smoothness. I’ll simply stand here and let it shower on me.
The charming and engaging film does not live up to the opening parts. But it shows that in the age when too many animated movies are like fast-found recollections of pot-roasting mum, the Walt Disney Studio still houses artists who know how to craft a movie like that. My opinion is that the poor children won’t feel overloaded afterward. The film dances on the screen and doesn’t come in and shake you to make it pleasant to you.
The story is largely set in an African American community, before and after the First World War in New Orleans, America’s picturesque. We meet Tiana, a young girl, who is chosen by Eudora her mother, and James’ father (Terrence Howard). Her mother is a sweet woman, her dad an arduous restaurant owner who brings a powerful rubber up. He’s going to the army and isn’t going back. Living is a fight for Tiana as a grown-up (Anika Noni Rose), but she has a goal to have her father’s gumbo open a restaurant (with just a soupcon with more red sauce).
