In 1995, Louisiana experienced a hurricane. In the ritualistic murder of former prostitute Dora Kelly Lange, detectives Martin Hart and Rustin “Rust” Cohle are investigating.
Cohle accepts grudgingly but shows up inebriated after losing his battle with alcoholism. Following up on the Fontenot disappearance, Hart and Cohle go to see Marie’s uncle Danny.
Seventeen years later, detectives Thomas Papania and Maynard Gilbough interrogate Cohle and Hart separately, five days apart, about Dora Kelly Lange Ten years after a falling out with Cohle in 2002, Hart and Cohle still haven’t communicated. In 1995, Papania and Gilbough wanted to know how the perpetrator may have committed another murder.

Marty is doubtful of Rust’s claim that this is not the killer’s first victim. Rust, a recovering alcoholic, shows up drunk at Marty’s house, where he strikes up a conversation with Maggie, Marty’s wife (Michelle Monaghan).
Another child claims to have been chased by a “green-eared spaghetti monster” into the woods. Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle likewise tries to steer the investigation in the direction of anti-Christian killings. To Rust’s dismay, he wants another task group to take command.

Few actors could make Cohle’s most cliched lines, such as “This area is like someone’s recollection of a town. And the memory is fading,” sound anything other than ludicrous. As Hart, Harrelson is on hand to correct Cohle when his navel-gazing gets out of hand. Or to chastise him if he’s being disrespectful. Since they’ve only been together for a short time when Hart and Cohle first meet in 1995, their relationship seems shaky from the get-go.

He also praises Cohle’s detective talents to the head of police and defends it in front of the investigating officers in present-day sequences. A successful – if troubled – professional relationship is evident, and it’s almost disheartening to find that the two stopped communicating in 2002.
After completing their investigation in 1995, Cohle and Hart determined that Dora Lange had been attending church before to her disappearance. As a result of Cohle’s suspicions, Hart and his wife Maggie are at odds. In addition, Cohle is suffering hallucinogenic synesthetic side effects as a result of his drug use, and he disdains Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle’s efforts to form a special task force to investigate “anti-Christian offenses.”

As a result of a lack of funds, his initial attempts at writing for television were unsuccessful. AMC’s series The Killing was Pizzolatto’s first major television writing gig.
Due to the fact that the series is an anthology, each season follows a different cast of characters in different locales. While selling the series to networks in early 2012, Pizzolatto began thinking about the lead roles.
