During the Vietnam War, a group of recruits arrives at the Parris Island training center of the United States Marine Corps. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, their drill instructor, employs harsh methods to prepare them for combat. Among the recruits are the overweight and dimwitted Leonard Lawrence, whom Hartman dubs “Gomer Pyle,” and the wisecracking J.T. Davis, who is dubbed “Joker” after interrupting Hartman’s introductory address with a John Wayne impression.

During basic training, Hartman appoints Joker as squad commander and assigns him the task of assisting Pyle in improving. Hartman finds a jelly doughnut in Pyle’s footlocker one day, blames the platoon for Pyle’s transgressions, and institutes a collective punishment policy in which any infraction committed by Pyle results in punishment for everyone else in the platoon. The recruits haze Pyle one night with a blanket party, in which Joker reluctantly joins. Pyle then appears to reinvent himself as a model recruit, demonstrating special expertise in marksmanship. This pleases Hartman but concerns Joker, who suspects Pyle is having a mental collapse after seeing him talking to his rifle. Joker finds Pyle in the bathroom the night before the recruits depart Parris Island, loading his service rifle with live ammunition, executing drill commands, and loudly reciting the Rifleman’s Creed. By January 1968, Joker is a sergeant working for the newspaper Stars and Stripes in Da Nang with his battle photographer colleague Private First Class Rafterman. Joker’s base is assaulted but holds during the Tet Offensive. The next morning, Joker and Rafterman are dispatched to Phu Bai, where Joker looks for and reunites with Sergeant “Cowboy,” a friend he met on Parris Island.
