A waiter pages “George Kaplan” at the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room restaurant in 1958 New York City after a pair of thugs probably request it. When advertising executive Roger Thornhill calls the same waiter, he is mistaken for Kaplan and kidnapped by the thugs and taken to Lester Townsend’s estate. He is questioned by spy Phillip Vandamm, a Cold War foe of the US who poses as Townsend to Thornhill. Vandamm staged Thornhill’s death in a drunken driving mishap. Thornhill survives but is unable to persuade his mother or the authorities about what happened, despite returning to Townsend’s estate. Thornhill discovers Townsend is a United Nations diplomat during the meeting. Thornhill and his mother go to Kaplan’s empty Plaza hotel suite. The thugs who had called the number from the lobby commence their pursuit after Thornhill answers Kaplan’s phone. Thornhill travels to the United Nations General Assembly Building to meet Townsend, who is not the same as Vandamm. One of the pursuing thugs kills Townsend with a knife, who collapses in Thornhill’s embrace. Thornhill is photographed as he grabs the knife, giving the impression that he is the murderer; he then flees, seeking the actual Kaplan. Thornhill has been mistaken for Kaplan by an unnamed government intelligence agency, but they decide against rescuing him for fear of jeopardizing their operation: Kaplan is a non-existent agent they made to confound and distract Vandamm.

Thornhill boards the Chicago-bound 20th Century Limited train, where he encounters Eve Kendall, who hides him from the cops. Kendall and Thornhill form a friendship—on Kendall’s part, because she is covertly working with Vandamm—and she informs Thornhill that she has arranged a meeting with Kaplan at a remote rural bus stop. Thornhill is waiting there when he is attacked by a crop duster aircraft. He steps in front of a speeding tank truck after attempting to hide in a cornfield; it brakes, and the plane crashes into it, enabling him to escape. Thornhill arrives at Kaplan’s hotel in Chicago and discovers that Kaplan had checked out before Kendall stated she spoke with him. Thornhill approaches her in her room, but she flees. He follows Vandamm to an art auction, where he discovers her buying a Mexican Purépecha statue. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this North By Northwest quiz. Vandamm dispatches his thugs to deal with Thornhill; in order to flee, Thornhill disrupts the bidding until police arrive and remove him. He claims to be the fugitive murderer, but they release him to the head of the government agency, “The Professor,” who reveals that Kaplan was created to divert Vandamm from the true government agent, Eve Kendall. Thornhill accepts to assist her in keeping her cover. Thornhill, now willingly playing the part of Kaplan, negotiates Vandamm’s surrender of Kendall to be arrested at the Mount Rushmore visitor center. Kendall then fatally shoots Thornhill and flees; it turns out her pistol was loaded with blanks. The Professor then plans for Thornhill and Kendall to meet. Thornhill discovers Kendall is to board an aircraft with Vandamm and his henchman Leonard. He attempts to talk her out of going, but is knocked out and locked in a hospital room.

Thornhill escapes the Professor’s clutches and travels to Vandamm’s home in order to save Kendall. Thornhill overhears at the house that the sculpture contains microfilm and that Leonard has found the blanks left in Kendall’s gun. Vandamm says he’ll kill Kendall by throwing her out of the aircraft. Thornhill gets to warn her with a sly note. Vandamm, Leonard, and Kendall make their way to the aircraft. Kendall grabs the sculpture and dashes to the pursuing Thornhill as Vandamm boards. They escape to Mount Rushmore’s summit. They are chased down the mountain by Vandamm’s thugs, including Leonard, who is fatally shot by a park ranger. Vandamm is apprehended by the Professor.
