Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee and ex-convict, arrives in Miami as part of the Mariel boatlift in 1980 and is assigned to a refugee camp with his best buddy Manny Ray and their companions Angel and Chi-Chi. In exchange for murdering a former Cuban general at the request of Miami drug lord Frank Lopez, the four are released and granted green cards. They find work as dishwashers in a restaurant, but Tony, who is dissatisfied, declares that he is destined for greater things. Omar Suarez, Frank’s right-hand man, dispatches the four to buy cocaine from Colombian dealers. Tony and Angel are kidnapped at gunpoint, and Tony is forced to witness Angel be dismembered with a chainsaw before Manny and Chi-Chi come to his rescue. Shadow places a radio-controlled bomb under the man’s vehicle, but Tony calls off the hit when he sees him with his wife and children. Tony kills Shadow before he can activate the bomb because he refuses to back down. Tony returns to Miami, where an enraged Sosa summons him and threatens him with repercussions for allowing the activist to give the exposé.
