Dan, the deliveryman, and Charlie have a set routine whereby Dan regularly gets pizza for Charlie, delivers it, and Charlie pays him at the mailbox without ever meeting him in person. Charlie wants to get back in touch with Ellie, his adolescent daughter with whom he is estranged and has not seen in eight years. Charlie offers her the $120,000 in his bank account in exchange for her spending time with him secretly. Ellie gives in when he agrees to assist with rewriting a school essay, but he demands that she also keep a journal he provides her. Thomas’ trips irritate Liz, who corrects him. Liz reveals that Charlie’s deceased boyfriend Alan, whose suicide because of religious remorse caused Charlie to start uncontrollably binge-eating, was her brother, and that she is the adopted daughter of the head pastor of New Life. Liz may disagree, but Thomas is still adamant that his goal is to assist Charlie.

The Whale Quiz

After reading some of the student work, Charlie informs the class that he is being replaced as a result of the email he sent. He turns on his webcam for the first time to show his appreciation for their candor, which shocks the students. He then calmly declares that the only things that count are the truthful writings his students submitted, and he ends the lesson by smashing his computer. Also, you will find out which character are you in this The Whale quiz. As Charlie’s condition gets worse, Liz comes back and consoles him. Ellie shows up to angrily challenge Charlie about an essay he revised for her; Charlie substituted a critique of Moby-Dick Ellie wrote in eighth grade, which Charlie thought was the most sincere essay he had ever read. Although Charlie insists that Ellie read the essay aloud, Ellie initially reprimands him as he makes one last effort to mend his ways. Charlie gets to his feet and moves toward her unaided, something he had attempted but failed to do on Ellie’s first visit. Charlie starts to float as he is engulfed in a brilliant white light as Ellie concludes reading. They both smile at each other.
