Todd Anderson enrolls at Vermont’s all-male preparatory boarding school Welton Academy for his final year of high school in 1959. He encounters his friends, senior Neil Perry, one of Welton’s most promising students, as well as Knox Overstreet, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks, Gerard Pitts, and Charlie Dalton. The boys are taken aback by the new English instructor, John Keating,’s unconventional teaching strategies on the first day of class. Keating, a Welton alumnus, exhorts his pupils to “make your lives extraordinary,” which he sums up with the Latin phrase carpe diem. (“seize the day”).

In later lessons, Keating has the students take turns standing on his desk to show them how to view life differently, instructs them to rip out the section of their poetry books that explains the formula for rating poetry, and asks them to invent their own walking style in the courtyard to foster individualism. Gale Nolan, a strict teacher, notices Keating’s techniques. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Dead Poets Society quiz. Neil restarts the club after discovering that Keating belonged to the illegal Dead Poets Society while attending Welton, and he and his friends sneak off campus to a cave where they read poetry. Their participation in the club and Keating’s lessons inspire them to live their lives on their own terms as the school year goes on. Even though his controlling father wants him to go to Harvard to study medicine, Neil finds his love of acting and lands the part of Puck in a local production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In response to the Perry family’s request, Nolan looks into Neil’s passing. In order to avoid punishment for his own membership in the Dead Poets Society, Cameron accuses Keating of killing Neil and identifies the other members. Cameron advises the others to let Keating take the blame when confronted by Charlie. After punching Cameron, Charlie is kicked out. Even though they are aware that Cameron’s claims are untrue, the boys are each summoned to Nolan’s office to sign a letter attesting to the veracity of Cameron’s accusations. When Todd’s turn arrives, he is hesitant to sign, but he eventually gives in to his parents’ pressure after seeing that the others have. Nolan, who had previously taught English at Welton before becoming principal, replaces Keating as the class’s instructor with the intention of upholding long-standing Welton customs. Keating leaves the class to collect his remaining possessions. Keating tells Todd that he believes him as he reveals to Todd that the boys were coerced into signing the document that sealed his fate. Nolan says he’ll kick Todd out. Todd says, “O Captain!” as he rises from his workstation. Nolan responds with another warning, “My Captain!” To Nolan’s chagrin and Keating’s happy surprise, the other members of the Dead Poets Society (aside from Cameron) and a number of other pupils in the class follow suit. Keating is moved by the lads’ encouragement and gratefully thanks them before leaving.
